Walter is a beautiful Olde English Bulldog (OEB) who was surrendered to IBR by his loving owner who was no longer able to care for him due to personal health issues. We can say he wants to be with his people at all times! He loves attention. He is also crate trained, house trained, walks well on a leash and knows basic commands! Being an OEB, Walter likes and needs exercise and stimulation. Long walks and play time are a good way for him to get his nervous energy out.
This guy loves people so much that he is not a fan of sharing and will need to be the only pet in the house. Walter does well with adults. He is pushy about needing attention but responds to a firm off and sit command. Walter doesnât do well with children. He responds to their excitement by jumping, pushing and barking. He doesnât hide his dislike for other dogs. He will walk on a leash but shows aggression toward other dogs. He is currently fostered in a pet free home and has access to every room except the kitchen. He stays out most of the time. A firm âWalter, outâ and Walter exits the kitchen. Bathroom trash cans now sit on the back of the tank. Walter has trash can issues. To separate off a room, a baby gate is pulled across the opening. It isnât attached to the wall. Walter will lay outside the gate and snooze or wait for you to walk by and pet him. He is content to just hang out.
All that being said, Walter is calm and loving. He likes to chew bones. He should not be given any toys except nyla bones. In December, Walterâs surrender Mom had to take him in for surgery. Walter chewed the âsqueekerâ out of a dog toy she had given him. The squeeker blocked his intestines and could have taken his life. He chews through rubber toys. Nyla bones are the safe choice for Walter. Due to his large frame, snacks are limited. He weighs 95 pounds and like the rest of us, he could stand to loose a few more pounds. He is not food aggressive and does well on his current diet. He eats half a cup, twice a day of grain free food., purchased at Walmart. His skin shines and he eats it all gone.
Walter has been to the vet. He had an infection in his paw (ingrown hairs of all things.) The hairs were removed and after a six-week regimen of antibiotics and steroids, Walter is fine. The vet recommends Alegra (one pill daily/ purchased over the counter) for allergies. His skin can get irritated by fabric softener and detergents. He does well with unscented detergents and a second rinse. Walter sleeps on a pad covered with a towel that is laundered and changed every other day. His skin has responded well: redness and licking have been drastically reduced. A daily brushing keeps shedding to a minimum. Walter is sedated (an injection) for nail clipping. Once a week wiping and ear wash keep his ears clean and fresh. His teeth are clean and white and he loves to smile for the camera. Walter is a good catch.
