Not such a great day today. Yesterday, the wife came home to puke in Jewel's crate. Jewel seemed fine until 5:30 yesterday evening and puked again which appeared to be bile and white froth. Jewel ate her dinner and was fine the rest of the evening. Before bed, poop and pee no problems. Jewel woke up in the middle of the night (0400 hours) and she puked again. She went back to bed. She did not have her breakfast but appeared ok. My wife came home from the commissary and Jewel followed me down the steps (as I go out to carry in the bags) but laid down on the landing and stayed there.

Well we took her to the vet and physical exam was ok and they did blood work. Turns out the liver enzymes were elevated. So they kept her to give her some fluids as well as an antiemetic. I am uncertain how elevated the test was but will find out when we pick her up later this afternoon. The vet said if the test are still elevated at follow-up, then a referral to a specialist will be made.

I can understand an elevated test because of the bile in her belly. We are trying our darndest to isolate what is making her puke. She does not go outside unsupervised. She eats Formm Beef Frittata and has some treats that she has had since we had her as a puppy. Bentley is fine and eats the same thing Jewel does.

Well maybe this is the same virus that was going around with a few of our members in earlier threads. Needless-to-say, I am a tad hyper about this as well as wife...and Bentley is missing his WooBee (security blanket).

Oh NO… I just did a google search and I found this article ( I really like Dr. Becker)
Should You Worry When Your Pet's Liver Test Is Abnormal?

Sounds to me like a virus, since she's acting like she feels unwell. Hopefully she will start to feel better soon w/fluids and meds. Sending hugs and prayers Roger… keep us posted!!!

Hopefully it's just a virus.

Sending prayers, and positive thoughts.

Hoping for a speedy recovery and nothing too serious.

Update. Jewel's ALT was off the chart and so elevated the machine could not do a count. Also her bilirubin is elevated. We do not know what is causing this. Jewel is home with us. We meds to give three times a day and on a bland diet. We go back for follow up on Wednesday to see if the levels are dropping.

I'm so sorry to hear this… has the vet given you any clues as to what is going on? Virus or something else? Roxie's liver enzymes are off but that is because of the cushings disease progression… I wish that I had some answers for you :( Sending you guys lots of prayers, and please keep us posted!!!

The vet has no idea what is causing this and the term used was "idiopathic." We were trying to isolate a cause. Jewel and Bentley are supervised when they go out and we watch them like hawks because of Bentley's acorn ordeal. Jewel is essentially healthy except for the torn ACL earlier this year. We also get praise from the vet for Jewel and Bentley's hygiene. So we will see on Wednesday.

Gosh I'm so sorry… I really hope that you get some answers soon :( How is her demeanor?!! Did they give her an antibiotic or anything?!!

The meds prescribed are Sucralfate (aka Carafate) which is an anti-ulcer medicine, Adenosyl a supplement for liver function, and Famotidine which is an antihistamine to help reduce the amount of acid in the stomach. We also have her on a bland diet with the Science Diet I/D kibble. The vet does not want us to give her anything except the aforementioned meds, food, and water. She does not want us to use the daily cleaning products on her as well (e.g. Witch Hazel).

Jewel has played a little this morning and is doing her usual routine and right now is sleeping on the couch next to me (because she is a princess). She has been alert and oriented this morning an does not appear lethargic. We were told to return immediately if Jewel appears jaundice.

If her blood serum levels do not decline, we will be referred to a specialist.

I am sending prayers for Jewel. I hope it is nothing serious-and all will be well again. :pray:for everyone.

Hoping for some good news in a few days when you take her back to the vet.

Sending lots of love and prayers to you and Jewel! Please keep us posted
