Update 11:30 am 12/16/14. I just got off the phone with the animal hospital. Jewel is doing OK. She is not vomiting and they really have not fed her due to the scheduled ultrasound. At this time they are calling this an acute event that is increasing her liver enzymes possibly caused by the secondary infection (i.e. UTI). She is on an IV, liver meds, and an antiemetic. She is alert and oriented, and showing everyone love watching everything in the ICU. Her clotting factors are fine which is a good sign. Depending on how the ultrasound turns out, they might do (well probably will), perform a lipid biopsy using a spine needle and aspirate some cells for evaluation.
The doctor asked if we had mushrooms in the backyard and I told her we killed them off as they have seen a few of this acute liver event this year which was caused by the mushrooms. I told the doctor that Jewel is supervised going out but that is possible. Also asked if we just opened a new bag of food and I said yes...but Bentley eats the same food and presently is OK. We also were asked where we live and told her it is considered rural. We have the usual critters running in the backyard...groundhogs, skunks, raccoons, deer, possums, etc. Jewel and Bentley did have a vaccination for Leptospirosis.
My wife and I will be going to see Jewel at 5pm at which time the Ultrasound should be finished as well as the lipid biopsy.
Again, thanks for all the prayers and positive vibes.
