I am not going to say we failed. I'm going to say we made all possible attempts to be one big happy dog family but it is just not possible for us to have Jawnie grow into a strong healthy Great Dane while he lives in the same household as Curly.
We have been heavily socializing Curly since the incident with other dogs of all ages and sizes, working with a trainer and preparing for the re-introduction. That re-introduction happened today. We had both dogs on leashes we gave them treats. They were fixated on us. Jawnie laid down about 1 foot away from Curly, head down. My husband and I casual talked. We stood there for about 10 minutes. the second my husband took a step back curly with no cue decided to lunge towards Jawnie. Since we had them on leashes, nothing happened but had they not been we could have had another fight on our hands.
We went out for dinner and decided - it's not that Curly is aggressive to all dogs, he just aggressive towards this dog,for whatever reason it may be. We could decide to make things work and keep the two dogs muzzled and separated for the rest of their lives, but that is not a good life for them. It's not fair for them for me to selfishly want to keep them both with me.
Jawnie is an awesome puppy and we have decided that he would be better suited with my husband's best friend (instead of my sister). Jawnie will take the cross country trip with us and continue his way on to LA to live with our friend and his Vizsla.
I know some of you were following this whole saga so I wanted to keep you up to date on it.
