I am sitting here in shock and could cry at any moment. So Radar had his 2nd ACL surgery 2 weeks ago, I took him to the vet for an x-ray to see how things were going cause he doesn't seem to be healing as fast as the first time -- thought that may happen since it was time 2 -- went to pick him and the news is worse then I could have ever imagined. He has somehow lost another screw we have tried both times to be so careful with him. Doc said he would try 1 more time and do both of the procedures they have to fix his ACL. So Wednesday is the day and if this doesn't work they will have to take his leg. I am shopping for a new sling for him any suggestions? should I also buy him some diapers? I guess we are going to have to use the Ace unless anyone knows of anything else that will make him sleep. I talked to the vet about it and she said if he hadn't had his palate shortened and his nares widened she would be very hesitant but since those are fixed seems confident so I guess that is the route I will have to take so we can get him healed. I am the most awful mom in the world to him and it is just killing me

Take his leg?? That seems so extreme. Is this happening because he doesn't do well being calm during recovery? I mean 3 surgeries ... I'm just starting to wonder about the vet. Don't mean to sound rude, please - but I can't understand ?

Sweetie, you are absolutely not awful! You are a very loving, wonderful mom. Anyone can see how much you love your little guy. I'm praying things go as we hope this last time. Please do not beat yourself up, as you are doing everything you can!

ETA: I agree with Jessica. Removal of his leg seems way extreme!

I know it all sounds extreme and to much for me to even handle right now. He does a pretty good job staying calm I think it happens when we go out to do our business I think and he hears something and wants to know what it is and turns fast I don't know. I think our surgeon is good he used to teach surgery at iowa state and said he has had 4 total that have gone wrong 1 dog got away from the owners and 2 that are like radar so we are number 4 out of thousands of sugeries when I talk to him he says he is devastated and wants to crawl in s hole. They say after this one they are running out of bone for the screws. I don't know just want to bawl my eyes out

How long does Radar have to remain calm post surgery? Maybe having him in diapers isn't a bad idea. And if you feel comfortable with using Ace, that might be the way to go.

Amy, please don't feel like this is your fault, it isn't. You are doing everything you can and the best for your little guy. I also hope the third time will be the charm and I'm sure the vet will do everything in his power to have a successful surgery. What is Ace-- I don't know what Ace is? And, if the worst should happen and Radar loses his leg, well, dogs live happy full lives with only 3 legs. Surely that won't happen though. My thoughts are with you, hoping for the best--but you're a great mom!

Aww I'm so sorry you're goi g through this with Radar Amy, but don't blame yourself, this is not your fault. You are doing everything you can for Radar. Maybe you can have him evaluated by a Specialist and see if there are other options, it seems extreme to remove his leg. Maybe the best thing to do is to keep him crated after his surgery and maybe put a diaper on him to limit his movements. I hope the 3rd time is successful and send lots of love, hugs and prayers your way.

My thoughts too.... don't you dare say you are a bad mom, you are doing everything you can in your power. Plus your love for Radar is soooooo apparent.... YOU ARE A WONDERFUL MOMMY!

Breathe, and possibly seek out a second opinion if it is possible.

I'm so sorry, sounds like a horrible ordeal for you all. Don't blame yourself, bad things happen to good people. He'll be fine after this and soon this will be just a bad memory.

My stomach dropped when I read this… first of all I'm so very sorry. I have no idea on leg/ACL surgeries, I agree that taking the leg sounds extreme… maybe getting a second opinion isn't a bad idea. If that has to be done it will be okay… I have a dear friend who had a three-legged dog named Charlie, and let me tell you he lived a VERY happy life. He ran faster than ANY dog we knew, and his favorite thing to do was play catch. Dogs live in the moment… they have the ability to enjoy WHAT they have and not worry themselves with what they don't.

Don't EVER say you are a bad MOM… a bad MOM would let her dog suffer needlessly w/out surgeries or meds. You are doing the BEST you can in this situation… it's going to be okay, and we are here for you no matter what happens.

Ruckus once had a nasty cough that was making him vomit, the vet gave me a narcotic painkiller to sedate him for a few days so he wouldn't cough and the antibiotic could do its job. I'm at work right now and don't remember what it was called, but I can look when I get home. It might help for him to have something like this so he can recover and just nap the days away and not pop another screw loose.
