Seasonal Allergies - Vet gave him antibiotic

So my wife takes Ace to the vet a couple of days ago. I told her to ask about his allergies. He still puts his face on the carpet and wipes his eyes, he licks his paws every now and then, and of course sneezes. He still has moisture on his tear stains area. It has decreased due to food change to Fromm's Lamb and Lentil. So I'm assuming it is environment related. Oh, both of his eyes swell, which look like 2 cherry eyes. Ace had 1 cherry eye surgery already, and this looks different.

Once my wife explained all this, he prescribed him Neomycin & Polymyxin B Sulfates & Dexamethasone Opthalmic Suspension USP. They are drops given every 8 hours. She asked if this was going to help with allergies, and he said yes. I've been reading up on this, seems that this is not given for possible allergies. This is given due to eye infections, bacterial most of the time. My wife asked him if there was anything oral that we could give him, he said no. I've read that zyrtec, benadryl, and even claritin have been given by vets. I don't know, unless he thinks it is some type of infection due to the swelling, but I'm not 100% comfortable with his decision.

I'm gonna run the course to see if it helps, but I'm not getting my hopes up. Hopefully some of you can shed some light on these drops from experience.

I'm guessing that the vet is trying to cover any possible infection that Ace might have or he's thinking the risk of Ace developing an infection may be high; the dexamethasone is a corticosteroid which will decrease inflammation so that component seems appropriate given that Ace is showing some swelling of the eyes. In any case, give it a few days and if no improvement go back to the vet and discuss other options. I would even give Ace an antihistamine now to see if it helps him. You can try the benadryl if you haven't yet. Good luck!

Henny has you covered. I'd do the same. We give Tyson benadryl if he's flared up bad. We also use local honey. Must be local though, I see your in McAllen, so anything in your area or surrounding would work. We're in Houston. It really helps alot for us,

I've had eye issues w/2 of my bullies… a vet eye specialist here in town told me that Zyrtec is best for eye problems. I have used Zyrtec & Benadryl both and they do seem to help. Walter has distichia and we haven't decided what route to take w/him yet. I think that for now we are going to have his eyelashes plucked out since he only has 2 lashes on each eye.

Agree -- sounds like he is eliminating any possible infection... i also would have his eyelashes checked
