You said he was tested for allergies was he then put on immunotherapy ? Winston is allergic to everything but has been getting regular injections of the things he’s most allergic too ( Immunotheraphy) since he was a year or so old and his outbreaks are very minimal and get better each year. I was not a believer at first my wife was but I can’t argue with the results . If you mentioned this in your post and I missed it I apologize. The way I understand it this helps his body build up natural defenses. We don’t like him on drugs if we can help it. We also don’t give him any foods that have his allergens like wheat and we make all his food. He’s a happy obnoxious funny boy that we love so much. Hope this helps .Hi I am at a complete loss here. My boy has been struggling with allergies for 4 years now. He is 5. It all started when my pug passed away, his best bud. He was eating Acana singles duck at the time and then they switched the formula and added sweet potatoes, he started going downhill from there. He was constantly itching and licking his paws. Shaking his head and getting ear infections, and infections on his skin and especially his wrinkles. He even gave himself a horrible eye ulcer from pawing at his eye and rubbing it against the corner of the staircase. He required a surgery when they scratch the eye surface in order for the ulcer to heal because it wasn’t healing and the vet stitched it closed so it would help with healing. It was awful. He also keeps getting paw cysts. He has been living in a cone for 3 years now because he scratches so violently. I feel like I have tried everything and I am losing hope. I hate seeing his quality of life go down like this. He is suffering. I have tried many things over the years with no relief. He has had 2 rounds of antibiotics for bacterial skin infections, and a round of ketoconazole pills for yeast infection. He has had many ear infection meds such as otomax and otozole, at least 4 times within the 3 years. I have tried Reactine, Benadryl, and Cytopoint and they have done nothing. The vet keeps telling me that if we don’t treat the allergies he will always get these secondary infections. I have tried natural remedies as well, I tried colostrum, bee pollen, probiotics, and I had him on a raw diet and went through different proteins, giving each one 3 months to adjust and nothing has changed. He just remains the same no matter what. I have tried every brand of high end kibble available in Canada and given them plenty of time to adjust and nothing. Even zignature food. He is just breaking my heart. I love him so much and would do anything for him and I feel like I am just failing him. In the last 2 years alone I have spent thousands of dollars on tests for him and meds. He is still not any better. I had allergy tests done both at home and at the vet, and even avoiding the things that showed up on the tests didn’t help, so I don’t think they are that reliable. The stress is killing me and I am so heartbroken watching my baby suffer. The only thing I haven’t tried is apoquel because of all the horror stories, but it may be my last and only option, what else can I do, I just want to see him happy, healthy and free from this miserable itching and recurring infections, and free from a cone for once. The attached photo is a current infection that he is being treated for. He had a culture of his skin and the vet prescribed zenequin and ketoconazole, which he is currently taking. They said it was a resistant strain of bacteria on his face and then they gave us ketoconazole for yeast infection as well. I feel so bad for him. Sorry for such a long rant, I’m just lost, thanks for reading.
I got it and applied it, kinda looks like yellow chalk in there, I hope it helps. ThanksOnce every 2nd days. This is thick, stays in there. Clean it out n reapply
Thanks. It’s been really difficult, I appreciate you sharing your experience. We had the blood allergy test done at the vet, and I also did the hair and saliva allergy tests but when I changed his diet to go along with the results there was no difference. The vet did say that they weren’t that reliable for food allergies. He does have a grass allergy and that’s impossible to avoid.Sorry to hear about your baby, we have been dealing with allergy issue with our 4+ year old male as well. We are trying him on the Hydrolized protein diet and he is allowed marshmallows as treats so that makes him happy. I know it's so frustrating to deal with and there never seems to be a solution. I doubt Apoquel will help yours, it really hasn't done anything for ours. There is another allergy medicine that works better than Apoquel but no one ever suggests it. I think it's called Atopix - the issue with it is in needs to be given from the freezer because it is apt to cause them stomach issues. Our bulldog couldn't handle it well so it was a no go for him. Have you seen a dog dermatologist or allergist at all?
We are down to having to do actual allergy testing for ours since the feet infections just keep returning. It's costly and even the dermatologist said she doesn't get 100% cure from them, and the shots he would need may take up to a year to be effective. It is frustrating that there is so little out there to help. Our vet has told us to try Claritin for ours to see if it helps, he takes two a day now (regular plain one without anything added to it).
For the head shakes, ours has those as well and gets them in groups. If he gets them in the am then I know I will see more that day. What stops it immediately is putting some Cheerios on the floor for him to eat up. It seems to be something with his neck where dropping it down for a bit stops it. He will actually come and get me for help now if it happens, but the cheerios help every time.
Sorry I'm not a ton of help, but know that you're not the only one dealing with this!![]()
He hasn’t seen a dermatologist and hasn’t had immunotherapy. Do you cook for him?You said he was tested for allergies was he then put on immunotherapy ? Immunotherapy
It’s only on his face, the rest of his body is fine. They did scrapes of the skin and cultures and found mixed bacteria and yeastHas this pup been evaluated for Demodectic Mange. It certainly looks like mange to me. Did the affected angry, thinning-hair areas start out on the face and head and then spread down the front legs and then rearward?
We have had 2 cases of Demodectic Mange that went untreated for months before the pup was turned over to rescue. The surrendering owners had spent thousands on their respective dogs until they were done with it and could no longer afford any kind of treatment. We step in and treat for mites with Nexgard, apple cider vinegar baths, Douxo Mousse and within 2 months we see hair growing back. One of the dogs had been incorrectly treated for almost a year and was nearly void of hair. I'm thinking Mange that has a yeast infection secondary due to scratching. It’s only on his face, the rest of his body is fine. The vet had given him Revolution in case of mites back in March when the same thing was going on but it didn’t have any effect. Does Revolution not cover demodectic mange? We have had 2 cases of Demodectic Mange that went untreated for months before the pup was turned over to rescue. I'm not sure that Revolution is a treatment for the mites that cause Demodex. Nexgard is the recognized go-to here in the US. It must be dosed monthly for a minimum of 6 months to be effective in killing all the mites. I highly recommend building this patient's immune system while being treated. If the yeast is still raging, then additional Ketoconazole treatment may be necessary. The vet had given him Revolution in case of mites back in March when the same thing was going on but it didn’t have any effect.
