New here mama of two with lots of questions

Hi I am new here -4 years ago we got our first Bullie from a rescue. No one could age her as she had worn her teeth down to nubs but the best guess was she was 3 or 4 at the time. So now 7 or 8. She has been such an amazing addition to our family. Behavior wise a super star and health wise so far her biggest well really her only issue is the seasonal alopecia on her flank which seems to have become permanent now.
This past August we adopted a puppy who was born in May. We love this one to pieces although she has had a little more medical issues, after 2 vets and an internist, her next appointment is with a specialist (surgeon) for soft palate resection and stenotic nares. She is a tiny thing just under 10 months 34 lbs and 13.5 inches tall and 15 inches long. I asked the vet and they said she is just tiny and all thing proportionate. They even did blood test when she saw the internist to check kidney and liver functions and everything was perfect she's just small. I am looking forward to getting to know everyone and their little furry loved ones. I would also love any advice on the seasonal hair loss for my oldest and the size and surgery for my baby. g

My bulldog Bella suffered from alopecia, it didn't seem to bother her at all. Some members have given their dogs melatonin to help, but I can't comment because we didn't try that. It CAN take a long time for the hair to come back and depending where you live w/all the constant weather changes this can make the issue worse.

My Walter had his nares and pallet done about a year ago, and my puppy Willow will be screened soon. IMO it's the BEST things for bulldogs IF they meet the requirements, it really helped with Walter's breathing and snoring.

Our vet mentioned it at her first visit one nostril was closed in a little more and the soft palate looked like it could be an issue but we were in a watch and see mode until we got her spayed. The intubation gave her reflux and that turned into a little respitory issue after X-rays and antibiotics we discovered her trachea was narrow and she only held down canned food so they put her on a medical canned diet that had been from thanksgiving to now. When we saw the internist she saw no other issues and her blood work was good so now we see the surgeon. The thing that makes me nervous is the surgeon intubates her and puts her under anthesia for the evaluation. That determines what needs to be done surgery wise. Is this two step process common. I hate the idea of intubation again let alone twice

Welcome! There is a lot of info about soft palate and nares surgery on EBN - there are quite a few bullies here who have gone through it. Castor was 1.5 and we noticed by the time he was about 1 that he threw up ever so often and panted a lot. He's a new dog now so for him the surgery was a blessing. He's almost three now and a small guy at lbs 42 or so.

For the palate evaluation, what my vet has always done, is schedule the surgery/evaluation together. if the evaluation determine the procedure is needed, then they do the surgery, if not, then the evaluation is done and he does not proceed with any procedure. This way the anthesia is only done once. I've had Three of my babies need some level of this done so ask away of any question and I hope to be able to give you some insight or at least support through the process.
