Ye Olde Neuter Discussion - with a twist?

So i have decided to wait a minimum of 2 years to neuter. Possibly won't ever do it.

The only lingering concern I have is the theory that testicular cancer increases. Which apparently the jury is still out on (i've read all the threads on here).

I was curious though. In human males, its a fairly well known fact that periodic "release" is not only enjoyable, its important for proper function of prostate and testicles.

I've read that it plays a role in "keeping things moving" down there, and wards off risks like prostate or testicular cancer.

When I hear people say "If you aren't going to stud him out, you should neuter him" ... my mind goes to this topic instead. The fact that a dog who is "bred" actually gets to "release" periodically.

Is there any school of thought - or even common practice, where male dogs can be "released" every so often in a controlled manner by a practitioner, so as to encourage a healthy reproductive system?

I can imagine that a male human who never ejaculates may have some major issues down there after some time.

Our dog trainer could do it... he is/or used to be a breeder so I guess that's how he knew how to. It didn't seem that complicated though I think if you ask around you can find a vet or breeder that you can take him to once or twice a year I wouldn't recommend doing it yourself in your home, think that might cause trouble and... ya, it makes a mess

If they aren't neutered I would have the vet manually stimulate him once a year.

Good point, that does make some sense. The only problem I could see is they do need stimulation, (as in a female in heat). It could pose difficult without the stimulation. I don't think magazines would work.

That brings up a good point, that I haven't really thought about. Our vet also recommends waiting until they are at least 18 months of age until neutering them. If you do it at 2 years of age, I really don't think you have to worry about cancer at that age. You might talk to your vet about the stimulation part and see what he thinks agout it. We have done it when collecting for a breeding, but have used a female in heat to help the situation.

Yeah I was asking because Im *not* comfortable doing it myself.
Baxter already looks at me strange when I scratch his butt for him.

Can male dogs have sex with spayed females and no risk of pregnancy? lol .
I was thinking maybe I could find him a girlfriend and let them go at it as often as they like.

Definitely glad to hear that its considered realistic to do the "release" thing yearly.
My only other question is - why is once a year sufficient? Seems really insufficient.
If anything, if I found a vet who was familiar with doing it, I would have it done once every 3 months minimum.

I once went to Bible College and didn't "sin" for nearly 3 months. Self sin. Lets just say everything shut down and got clogged up.
Took some time to get things going again.

Baxter runs full steam for nearly an hour with minor breaks in between at the park ... would this be more intense than that?

He would probably not try to mount a spayed female. It's not the female that necessarily stimulates them, it's the heat that does.

However, perhaps a vet would be able to exercise him without the female. Once he gets used to doing it he will probably do okay.

The reason why I wouldn't recommend you or anyone he knows doing it cos he might start acting strange with you... possibly possessive and needy

A spayed female wont let him mate, females only mate when in heat and since that doesn't occur in spayed dogs it's just not going to happen, lol.

It's good for them to release twice a year as that's the normal cycle of a female in heat. I don't think more is necessary, actually I think it will do more harm than help... behavior wise. If he's not getting his release he might possibly get aggression issues and get frustrated and destructive, and health wise it will do good for him too

I had a Bassett hound years ago and the vet told me if you start breeding him you better continue it because once you start he'll be "humping" everything in sight if you stop. Of course I was young and paid no attention. My neighbor had a female he was looking to breed and I let Wally my Bassett have at it and sure enough he was a humping hound after that. No leg was safe! I'm not sure of the health issue of never releasing though.
