Hey all. Haven't posted in awhile, but last Friday Lincoln had bilateral distichiasis surgery. It all started about a month ago. He was referred to an eye specialist and he knew it right off the bat that he needed surgery. We got him in the next day and he is doing great now.

All I can say is I am so thankful to have had good insurance coverage for him. PetPlan (which I HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!!) covered everything, including the examination fees. They have been amazing every step of the way.

So glad all is well!! and ;) would love to hear more about that insurance... I did look it up real quick right now and will check further, but ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh how glad you had it to take care of your baby!!!

Does that have to do with eyelashes growing abnormally?

Yes, it is a hereditary condition where there are some abnormal eye lashes that grown on the rim of the eye lid towards the eyeball. Very uncomfortable. He developed an ulcer from it in his right eye.

Okay, my 5 month old has excessive tearing so he has a vet appointment later this week to see if it's from his eyelashes as I know that can be the cause for the tearing.

interesting!! I just looked up bilateral distichiasis and see that Hank had both that and entropion issue. I just thought they went hand in hand but now I see they certainly don't. He did have those eyelashes plucked at first but they grew back, and then had eyelid surgery when he had the soft palate and nares done. but you can have one without the other... Learning every day :)

Yeah the eye lashes can be plucked, however, they discourage doing it since it causes the lashes to grow back thicker and faster (and you usually can't get all of them). The surgery includes cryotherapy, which kills the hair follicle and permanently keeps them from coming back. There is a possibility of them growing back, but it does have a high success rate.

kind of funny that I'm just now realizing that both were done. I know the spoke of the follicle thing, but he also had stitches I think,,, geesh!!! it's only been a few months and I cant remember. I think that's because I was so concerned with the palate. Thanks for the info :)

My Walter had that done, and so far we have not had any issues.

Lincoln is beautiful! Congratulations on successful surgery.

I have a 1 year old English bulldog named “Louie” and he just underwent surgery on his eyes yesterday. The cost of the surgery was $1,689.97. He did develope an ulcer but we caught it right away. Louie’s eyes were always watering and would at times almost close. He will have to wear his cone for 2 weeks till his follow-up and that seems to be the only problem for his recovery right now.
