Our first and only Bully, Winston does this weird thing...what gives?

Winston does this thing when he is sitting beside someone on the couch. He will, occasionally, throw himself backwards so he's propped up against us in a full sitting up straight posture. He will stay sitting on his butt with his back straight up just like a human. It's so odd to us; we call it "going on a date" because he will often put his paw on your knee while he is in the posture. He usually stays like this for 10-30 min then goes back to normal dog sitting. Has anyone else seen this? If so, why does he do that? Thanks! BTW, the photos I included aren't very cute but they show him going "on a date".

He also occasionally insisting on sleeping on the hard wooden coffee table when he has many better options. I honestly don't know what he's thinking half the time.
