Help Needed! Nail Question

Adding to [MENTION=1714]Sherry[/MENTION] post about SLO, my lab has SLO. And many vets cannot diagnose this just by looking, and will want to do many many expensive procedures, and SLO is not curable, just treatable. It also, if I remember correctly, cannot be diagnosed with tests, the tests only rule out other issues. Not positive on that, but I think we read that somewhere when researching this for my lab. We denied these procedures and went to a specialist. A dermatologist vet can often diagnose this just by looking. If you are thinking it is SLO, get a referral from your vet to see a specialist. This is what we did, and it saved us $5,000+ on procedures.

Well it's going to be a long weekend without Mom around so maybe I'll go get a dremmel and see if we can work on his fear of it for his nails sake.

Note that you would have to grind really hard to open the quik so it's safer than nail cutters. Mandy doesn't like her nails done period. So it's the boys holding her down while I do the nails. She gets over it real quik (lol) and we give her a yummy treat when it's all done

from my experience with all breeds of dogs, I think bully's are the worst when it comes to trimming nails.

Schultz's nails have split to the toe pad more times then I care to remember.... Several times he had to take a course of antibiotics to avoid infection. I had his thyroid function tested (because brittle nails are a symptom of hypothyroidism) and tested for vitamin deficiencies both tests turned out to be normal. So I got diligent about his pedicures ...every 3-4 weeks I take him to get his nails clipped and dremeled (so there are no rough edges). Maintaining this routine he's only split 1 nail in the last 2 years.
I think some dogs just have soft nails that are prone to breaking, just like humans.
