Low Sodium Food

So as most of you know Dually is in congestive heart failure and we recently found out he has an irregular heartbeat ( I think I could open a pharmacy with all the meds he is on haha). That being said the vet wants him on a low sodium diet. What food would you recommend that has low sodium that won't break the bank?? Right now I feed him Pedigree but he is hardly eating it, he mostly eats eggs, chicken or beef and sometimes some canned food. Ever since he got sick I have been giving him whatever he will eat so now he doesn't really want his dry food but honestly that doesn't bother me as long as he is eating something.

I had a Boston who had CHF, she was very old - 16- and didn't survive but a few months.

It's been many years ago, but the vet had a food in his office he recomended.
It smelled awful, and she wouldn't eat it.
I just did homade, usually boiled chicken, and steamed veggies, and made a puree of it in the food processor.

I'm so sorry for you and Dually, how old is he?

Glad Dually is smart enough not to eat pedigree! No matter what in his condition I personally would go raw or homemade. If you’re already cooking for him why not do it permanently. I don’t know how you personally eat at home but if you’re making example hamburger for supper, make an extra pattie for him. Not in butter of course. Add a cup of veggies to the patty or chicken etc. best way to control sodium is make it yourself. Kibble companies do not put any list of sodium as they don’t have to. For I, it’s no brainer I would definitely like I said raw or homemade. Homemade is like an extra plate but for Dually. Omega3 is good for HCF as it doesn’t have the same effect as in dogs/cats as it does in humans. Humans with hearts issues, omega 3 is a NO go! Omega 3 you can get it in fish. Sardines n Mackerel are top for O3 n cheap too! Also add flax seeds to the meals daily!!! I always go the food way for vitamins and oils. Capsules of oils what ppl don’t know is it’s heated up for the capsules to seal. You just turned good oil to a bad oil. Pointless giving capsules of oils. That’s my 2cents. I use to buy a massive turkey n boil it for 8hrs. All fats in the garbage! Keep the broth n top it meal daily. I still do the broth n freeze them in ice cube trays for treats. And of course no salt to the broth. Frozen veggies and fruits are great for snacks... make meals n freeze then in ziploc bags for the weeks or months. I use to cook for the whole month n freeze all. Takes half day. I find half a day per month for my dog to stay healthy is worth every minute of it...

As for Dually, I will try a homemade diet. I just need to read up some more on it and make sure he is getting the necessary vitamins and nutrients that he needs. I do have a liquid Omega 3 supplement at home that I give him and also Vitamin E (when I remember). I will purchase some flax seed this week when I go to the store.

This morning he got eggs and chicken and gobbled it right up!! My family thinks I have gone absolutely insane with feeding him but I will do whatever is best for him so that he has more time and is comfortable.

Again, I appreciate everyones help and continued prayers!! You guys are the best!!

Egg n chicken is all protein. You need to add veggies n a good source of fat. Never give cook fats.

Thank you!! I have been giving him lots of eggs, chicken, omega 3 oil and trying to add some veggies. He seems to be doing pretty good and eating almost everything I give him. In the evening I add some of his dry food to the eggs or chicken along with some low sodium chicken broth.
