JUST A DOG

From time to time, people tell me, "lighten up, it's just a dog," or "that's a lot of money for just a dog." They don't understand the distance traveled, the time spent, or the costs involved for "just a dog."

Some of my proudest moments have come about with "just a dog." Many hours have passed and my only company was "just a dog," but I did not once feel slighted.

Some of my saddest moments have been brought about by "just a dog," and in those days of darkness, the gentle touch of "just a dog" gave me comfort and reason to overcome the day.

If you, too, think it's "just a dog," then you will probably understand phrases like "just a friend," "just a sunrise," or "just a promise."

"Just a dog" brings into my life the very essence of friendship, trust, and pure and unbridled joy.

"Just a dog" brings out the compassion and patience that makes me a better person.

Because of "just a dog," I will rise early, take long walks and look longingly to the future. So for me and folks like me, it's not "just a dog" but an embodiment of all the hopes and dreams of the future, the fond memories of the past, and the pure joy of the moment.

I hope that someday they can understand that it's not "just a dog," but the thing that gives me humanity and keeps me from being "just a man." So the next time you hear the phrase "just a dog," just smile--because they "just don't understand."

yep! just a dog ;) We all know better :)

I always refer to my dogs at my 'fur babies'. I get rather annoyed when people say to me "its just a dog." Ugh, we have one relative that had the nerve fuss at me about my dog. I have grown up with dogs in my life, I know how to care for dogs and how to treat them. Well, I have a pug that was runt, very clingy, a real mommas boy, always glued to my hip. He likes to be held like a baby. And I cheerish every moment with him. Anyways, I was holding him like a baby and he was sleeping in my arms, and this relative gets all snarky and says "Put him on the ground, hes a dog, treat him like a dog." Ugh, I got up from my seat, and my precious dog and I left. I just walked out of the room and left. I hate people that act like a dog is 'just a dog'. My dog is my heart and I would rather spend time with my dogs then most humans(family included.)

So true. That brought tears to my eyes! We have had Bacon less than a year, and put a ton of money into his vet care. My family tells me all the time it's not worth it. I just ignore them.

I love this..... thank you for posting!

Just read this as I sit here holding my dog's hand (paw). He is a dog but there is nothing 'just' about it. He is my friend.
