Is this a cherry eye? What do I do?

I'm at a loss for what I need to do for Tucker. These are pictures of his left eye. The second picture was taken yesterday. The first one was today, so this thing is getting bigger. I tried rubbing it inward, as I have seen on the video demonstration, but nothing has happened. He does have a little "sleep" that appears occasionally in the eye. Do I need to take him to the vet?
Please advise. Thanks!

You take him to the vet to confirm it's cherry eye (it probably is though), and then decide if you want to wait to see if the other comes out, then either get them tacked or removed.
Or, don't wait and have this one tacked or removed.

When Blue got it, we waited a few months to see if he'd get it in his other, he did. We then had both tacked. He was about 9-10 months old when we did it and have not had any issues since.

Many prefer to get it removed as opposed to tacking because many vets will say there's a high chance of it coming out, and in many cases it does. My ophthalmologist disagrees and prefers to tack.

Maybe put off the neuter for a couple of months to see if it comes out in the other eye. Only reason I'm saying this is there's a good chance it will. Not always of course, but a good chance. So if it does, you'd have to put Tucker under again.

Unless there's a health reason for getting him neutered now, it won't hurt him to wait a few months.

The reason I have it scheduled for him, at 8 months, is because he is already trying to hump his sister, Sophie, who is 4 months old. I don't want her to wind up pregnant, so I don't feel like I have a choice. I appreciate your advice though!

Hey Ginger [MENTION=14393]Mom of Tucker[/MENTION], I'm pretty sure it's cherry eye. There's no need to rush to the vet with him though. Cherry eye is only a cosmetic problem--not dangerous to Tucker's health at all. I've had two bullies with cherry eye and we decided not to have the surgery on our first one. When our last bully, Annie, got it in one eye, we found a vet who was really an expert at fixing cherry eye. She recommended doing her procedure on both eyes at the same time, even though only one eye was affected, for the reason Ellie said, that if the gland pops out on one eye it will almost surely happen at some point in the other one. Doing both eyes at the same time removes the need for a second surgery, anesthesia, expense, etc.

The problem you run into if the surgeon removes that gland is that tear production is reduced and you run the chance of resulting dry eye (which is truly terrible and can eventually lead to blindness). Our vet enlarged the pocket that holds the gland and sewed it back in. Annie did great and her eyes looked great and the glands never came back out. The cost was around $800 about five years ago, which I thought was very reasonable. I would highly recommend a specialist who has experience in cherry eye surgery. You vet can probably recommend one to you.

One more thing--you don't have to wait for the glad in the other eye to pop out to have the surgery. They can do the procedure before the glad pops out to keep it from coming out in the future.

Interesting, I never heard of doing the procedure before it comes out. Will keep that in mind. Thanks.

Hello there. It's a very normal thing in this breed. Before you go to the vet and do the surgery, I suggest you try to massage it back in. There's a couple videos on YouTube about that. I have a bully whose cherry eye pops out like once every two or three months and I just massage it back in.
