Update! Soft palate surgery on older bulldog.

Re: Soft palate surgery on older bulldog.

IMO the biggest issue IS the sedation at her age. I'm sure the vet will be able to HEAR and see her condition and why you even consider taking the risk of sedating for the surgery. Sorry, but I would not let them sedate only for examination. That would possible mean two sedations close to each other.

Will they do the procedure while she is already under if she needs it? My vet did that with Cheli...

I agree, I told my husband that I don't want her sedated but as usual I'm wrong... This will not be full anesthetics, but I'm very worried, Joey isn't in good shape and she's old:( I'm hoping once we get there that the vet can see it's not a good idea, and I will ask him to reconsider. I'm not really the one deciding but I'll speak my opinion...

That's what they did with Castor. Only one sedation. When we brought him in for an evaluation the vet said Castor was very loud but he would need to sedate him to see whether surgery was needed. So when we came back a week or so later, they sedated him, the vet examined him and operated then and there. I don't see why they should sedate her twice?

Re:UPDATE! Soft palate surgery on older bulldog.

Joey's vet visit with the specialist was yesterday, all went well so far:whew: It did nearly kill me leaving her there for sedation but thankfully it all went well and she is a great candidate for the elongated soft palate surgery despite her age.

Her trachea and airways in general looks great, it was the vets main concern going in to this. He says if the trachea is badly damaged and collapses there isn't much he can do and sometimes on older dogs cartilage can build up in the airways and then it won't really make a difference with the palate surgery... but ja... everything on Joey looked good so he's going ahead with the surgery, she's scheduled in this morning, not sure what time and I'm a wreak.

I'll update as soon as I hear anything.

Petra, I'm terribly sorry just reading this now and praying for you and Joey. Sending big hugs, healing thought and prayers your way

Keeping my fingers and toes crossed for a great outcome!

Lots and lots of positive thoughts, prayers and paws are crossed! (((Hugs)))

Good to hear the vet said things look fine; Castor and I are thinking of you and Joey!

Just talked to the vet assistant, Joey's surgery went really well and she's breathing much better. She got her nares widened as well so I think it will be a huge improvement for her:) The vet assistant will sit with her now for a while, she's just starting to wake up and the surgeon will call us soon with more details. We can pick her up tomorrow even, I'm so relived!

Glad to hear everything went well. What a relief for you.

Great news! I'm so happy for you!

It really is so great, I'm feeling 100kg lighter:whew: The surgeon called, he's happy with how the operation went but he says that Joey's nares are still tight "inside"... he widened what he could. He also said because of her large tongue she'll always have some degree of breathing issues, it's simply in the way.

But ja... things are looking good:) I can't wait to get her home, she's greatly missed<3
