Tear Stain Improvement Journey

Hi, just wanted to recently share my experiences dealing with Crabcake's tear stains. Almost immediately upon arrival, he went from a completely beautiful white face to immediately battling some bad tear stains as you can see below.




About 6 weeks ago, I started through the recommendation of my vet to start wiping his face with dry Kleenex 3-5 times a day, and through the recommendations on here I started also feeding him some greek yogurt with his food. This seemed to stop the worsening, but it was not brightening his face. About 3 weeks ago, my vet offered me a sample of a product called "OcuBright" to feed him once a day. He said most of these products are really unreliable, but this was a new product he just received at a vet convention so it was worth a try. Additionally, about 2 weeks ago, through the recommendations of this community I started feeding him wet and dry Blue Wilderness food. As you can see, the improvements are quite dramatic, and he is back to being his sexy self. Not sure if this plan works for everyone, but it has been a really dramatic change for him in a short period of time.

The reason it works is because it contains Tylosin. Tylan(tylosin) powder does the exact same thing and it's absolutely true that a short 2-4 week 1/8 teaspoon with breakfast every day regimen will knock out those tear stains. We've been using it for many years with great success.
Tear stains will/may, however, return if the source of the staining is not corrected. Most of the time it's food related. Change to a decent food and stains stay gone.

ok so, i think i would like to give this at least a one time shot and see if i can get Hanks under control.. Hank had the entropian surgery as he had those nasty eyelashes poking him but i dont seem to be able to clear his face. where and how do you purchace?

I posted this before, but I'm copying and pasting it ( and adding a little to it ):
Although tylosin antibiotic for 2 weeks would work, I would try to save it for more serious conditions such as chronic diarrhea then to use it for tear stains. I would use filtered water, ceramic or stainless steel water bowl only, make sure pet's food allergies are under control ( which might include an antihistamine for environmental allergies and a switch to a dehydrated raw food like Honest Kitchen for food allergies ) and wash the dog's face near the eyes with some boric acid eye solution eg. collyrium or make your own. I read this formula on one web site:

Add one tablespoon Boracic Acid to a cup of boiling water, mix well. Place several cotton swabs into a plastic container. Pour the cooled solution over the swabs and seal the container. Use one swab daily to clean away tear and face staining. Make up a new mix at least once weekly.

In other posts people have suggested giving marrow bones, and adding turmeric ( start with 1/4 tsp turmeric and six twists of the pepper grinder ) and ground organic ginger (1/2 tsp per 20 pounds)

Make sure dog has good nose rope care ( regular cleaning ).

Just out of curiosity, I looked at this in case Louie ever develops tear stains and the ingredients don't look to be great...soy flour, wheat flour, high fructose corn syrup, corn syrup, etc.

Not impressed with those ingredients either but I'd guess that they are not in sufficient quantity to cause issues equal to kibble with those very same ingredients. I'm sure that the grains are there to mask the unpleasant taste of the active ingredient.

Yeah, I was wondering if the quantity maybe wasn't significant enough to make a difference.

This is all great info! Lady came to us with horrible tear stains and cherry eye in both eyes. Already following protocol of filtered water, ACV, stainless bowls only, daily cleaning, and on Fromms. Also doing raw goats milk for probiotic. Went to eye specialist yesterday to address the cherry eyes. Anyone think the surgery will help the tear stains too?

Cherry eye correction could certainly help with the tear staining...if the cherry eye is irritating the eyes enough to cause excessive tear production. Once the cherry eye is fixed give a couple of months before making a decision on how/whether to treat the tear staining.

Was talking to my breeder for tear stains n she uses cornstarch. Good for wrinkles...
