Spaying & Leash Question

Hello everyone!

So, Goomba is almost 5 months old and I am looking to get her spayed soon. Are there any cons to doing this? Also, would you guys recommend going to a vet that specializes in bulldogs for the procedure?

Goomba is really having a problem walking on a leash. Actually, she doesn't even want to go outside. So once she is outside, she'll walk for about 2 minutes and then just stand there as dead weight. Do you guys have any advice to make this easier on both of us? Most of the time she usually doesn't even like to be touched, unless I halfway ignore her, then she comes over to get some attention!

I would 150% have the procedure done with a bulldog specialist. The breed is very different from others in regards to going under. You want someone who knows the breed. You said you're in the Woodlands right? Our vet specializes in bulldogs, and they have performed surgery on Tyson as well. I know its not super close for you -- but its not far I would totally make the trip for this procedure knowing she's in good hands. We have lots of Houston members who go there as well Brittmore Animal Hospital. They are located off the Beltway & I-10. Brittmoore Animal Hospital - Home I know that Todd @Marine91, David @Davidh @1Chumly [MENTION=8518]sunkissedpr1ncs[/MENTION] are a few off hand that can vouch for them as well.

All the docs there are great, we've been to Dr. Dikeman, our usual go to is Dr. Chellappan (she has a frenchie), and Dr. Burbridge is the one who performed Tyson's surgery. I cannot rave enough about them. Other than the spay, hopefully you don't need anything else major, but if you ever have something "bulldog specific" I would go there.

In terms of walking, its something you just have to work on everyday. LOL It will slowly get better. I would try a harness instead of a leash, takes pressure off the neck, and it give you much more control. Also, bust out the treats.... small ones so you can reward her walking, or get her to move when she's still. Eventually she'll catch on! She's precious!!! Can't get enough pictures!

I spent a lot of time finding a vet that knows the breed , and suggest you also do that . As Bully,s can have breathing issues they can also have issues when there going thru any operation as they are knocked out for a period of time . As far as the spaying that should not be a issue i do not think its the knocking them out that can be a issue , look for a good vet , even ask your breeder who they use as they are delivered by C-section , or maybe that vet will know someone in your area they trust with your precious .

I definitely would take the advice @TyTysmom gave you, We have only been to Brittmoore a few times in the year we have lived in Houston but they are so knowledgeable on the breed and you will always see a ton of bullies when you go there! We just got a new puppy too and that is the only vet the breeder recommends as well. They are in the Woodlands and have to go out to Brittmoore quite a bit for breeding purposes so you know they have to be good for them to make that trip all the time! I have read many things suggesting to wait to fix your bulldog until they are at least 1.5 -2 years old as well...I would have to look up exactly why again but I think if they get fixed too soon, it obviously messes with their hormones and they don't grow into the nice bulldog shape that they should I'm sure you can find lots of info on that on here as well if you do a search.

Our almost 3 year old bully, Barkley refuses to go on walks and I have heard of plenty of other bullies having the same problem, so you are not alone there! When he even hears the word "walk", he will go run and hide in his crate....So lazy!! haha....Once in a blue moon we can lure him out with treats and get him going but he would much rather just be at home I guess! I'm hoping we can get the new puppy to like walks more and maybe it'll make Barkley wanna come along too!

Claimer/Disclaimer:
I have a 1 year old "stubborn" EB Female (don't like to use the term "bitch"; she is too sweet and my! conditioning has made it an ill word)

Now that this fact is out of the way:
1. I do not know about spaying
2. I don't think there is a connection between spaying and exercise (I may be wrong; hopefully not)

What I did for my baby (scold me she is still a baby and will always be; and I have another dog; a 5+ year old boxer)
1. Enroll her in a training/socialization program (5:30 am - 7:00 am); way too early by my standards (I glorified typist (aka SW engineer; so late nights are routine)
2. Go with her and participate; dogs are amazing; they actually look forward to a ride and routine every morning (creatures of habit)
3. In the training program, use a body belt and leash (more of body belt and less of leash; they tire on the leash until they learn pulling/resisting is pointless and uncomfortable (3-4 days max)
4. Treat when they learn something "sensible/manageable" (handler directive)
5. Repeat for 2-3 months diligently on your part; you will not be able to sleep beyond 5:00 am in the morning
6. I have mentioned these ungodly hours for 2 reasons:
a) It is cool in the morning; bullies love the cool
b) After 6-8 of sleep, they are raring to go
7. Bullies need to walk; lazy bums will get way with anything and everything if we let them!

I highly recommend Brittmore. I usually see Dr. Dikeman but have recently also seen Dr Gunter a couple of times. She was very nice and I have nothing against her but personally, Dr Dikeman is my man! My son just took his aging Lab there too as his usual vet was absolutely useless but that is a whole different story. For any surgery I wouldn't go anywhere else.

Monty is another bully that would much rather lay on his bed, thank you very much! Walk? you have got to be kidding!

Good lord.... I love her face and that name ROCKS!!! Goomba.... I love it!

As for walking..... treats, a very high valued treat only used for walks.

Spay -- bully experienced vet is a must, we had Banks done at 6 months old and it did not impact her growht or behavior in anyway.

I'm actually headed to Brittmoore in a bit to pick up some injections for Tyson. I secretly love going there because there's always a bulldog to love on, hee hee hee. I'm crazy I know!

I have to agree that treats make walking much easier, something they absolutely love is best to use and keep the focus in front while walking, it takes a while but they catch on.

When I read your story about your EB not walking I had to LOL!!! My EB, Pazelee, is the exact same. I'm kind of at a loss. I've tried treats, tugging her and waiting patiently. UGH!! I'm looking into training now. I need the help as much as she does.

I would take her to Brittmorre Animal Hospital too. We use Dr. Dykeman, and he is awesome, as are the other vets. I like waiting until they are around one year of age before spaying or neutering, but some people don't want to go through the heat cycle, and I don't blame them, it's a pain. As far as walking, some like to walk and some don't. Try treats to see if that helps.

My Penny is about 5 1/2 months old now. I am actually driving about 1 1/2 hrs for an eval appt on Saturday for her spay and possible nare surgery. She will walk ( we also use a harness on her) but she's gets winded much sooner than her brother. But she can certainly go 0-20 in seconds if she's pouncing on her brother from across the room or the yard. Lol- we also spend a lot of time outside. Or going places. It soon becomes second nature for them. Remember, they are some stubborn babies- so consistency is key.
