I thought I'd tell you guys about my little pity party the other night.
I work with community college students and love my job, even though some of the students make that difficult at times. My boss has had a family emergency, and as her #2 in command, I have stood in for her very often (part of the reason you haven't seen me here so much) during the past year. Saturday she asked me to stand in for her at graduation, which meant I had to go to the 3 1/2-hour rehearsal that morning, and pin the nursing graduates as they walked across the stage that night. I was happy to do this.
I felt honored that she asked me to stand in for her. Saturday evening, 1 hour before graduation, she called to tell me that I needed to have an award with me that was being presented. The award was back on campus. I rushed back to the school, found the award, raced back to the arena, just in time to give the award to the presenter, put on my regalia, and march into the arena with the rest of the faculty. I was frazzled!
I noticed that all the nursing instructors were holding large bouquets of flowers. I finished the night with a sore back, aching feet, and hundreds of little holes in my finger from pinning close to 100 students. I was the only instructor who didn't get flowers--after giving up my Saturday for those guys! Then a good friend sent this to me, not knowing what happened. Timing is everything.
I felt pretty stupid for being hurt. So many people have so many problems much bigger than this. It put the night in perspective.
