URGENT!!! Mast Cell Tumor (MCT) Cancer :(

My heart is deeply heavy.. the tears do not stop. I haven't posted in a while, but if anyone will understand I'm sure it's my fellow bully lovers! <3 Please if you've dealt with MCT or have a story to share please do.. I need hope! I need positivity! I need prayers!

My sweet baby boy Chelios will be 8 years old in March! Back in September I noticed a small bump in between my fur baby's paw. Bump was extremely small and stayed that way for a good while until one day it started growing. I took Chelios to the vet, doctor said it was a cyst. He prescribed two meds and on our way home we went. Two weeks on the meds passed and the bump wasn't getting any better. It was getting bigger and a bit smelly. Plus a second bump formed on the same paw just in between different toes. So we went back to the doctor and this time he perscribed Stronger antibiotics. A little more then a week goes by and poor baby his paw was getting worst. It smelling rotten, bleeding, it was horribly gross, and looked abnormal since the once pump now formed open. I called the doctor immediately and we scheduled a biopsy and culture test. Procedures were done and a week later we received the results.. doctor said his paw was so severally infected that the test results didn't come back 100%, but that the pathologist think it's cancer. So we schedule a second biopsy and anxiously wait another week for the results. Doctor calls.. my heart drops. It's the one thing I feared and prayed it wasn't.. its cancer.. it's grade 3 Mast Cell Tumor that grow at a rapid rate and now my boy has three tumors on one paw. My doctor referred us to an oncologist in Tucson, Az. Sadly they don't have appointments till the end of January. My Poor baby is in pain.. he limps around the house. He only functions and gets sleep when he's in pain killers. I'm stressing! I have to wait over a month till I get answers! Options, choices on how we're going to fight this! I can't loose my son, not yet! Please someone ease my worries! Tell me success story's!

Removal of tumors is the best treatment. If it is surely Mast Cell, then removal of the lesion could take care of it. Sandy's Trudy had Mast Cell and 5 tumors were removed including one on her lower jaw that required removal of part of her jaw. She survived and went living for many years(14 years). I cannot recall the stage of Trudy's cancer but I'm thinking it was stage 1 or 2. She, however, was not given any type of chemo or radiation. Her Vet was experienced with Mast Cell and a quick diagnosis and excision were key to her survival. Stage 3 is not a particularly good prognosis but I'd be inclined to have the tumors removed right away and hope that that's the end of it...giving your baby the best chance for cure. Proper excision requires wide margins. Follow-up chemo will likely be recommended...and possibly radiation.
I recall giving Trudy Benadryl for the remainder of her life to fight off the effects of the histamine produced by Mast Cell.

I am so sorry to see such a sweet Bulldog have any problems, especially a form of cancer. I just know a bit about MCT from reading about potential problems dogs can have and my Vet (who is from GA and always had EBD's) telling us to always check paws when we groom our boy. Cancer sucks. Sincerely hope you find a excellent Veterinary Oncologist ASAP and that Chelios is comfortable as possible until he can get the best treatment available.

I hope you can get in touch with an expert soon - are there any vet hospitals or universities with vet training in your area that you can contact - even if they cannot take Chelios in they may have information about where help can be got.

Thank You for the quick search! We actually live in Texas. Doctor recommended this particular doctor in Arizona which is actually the closest oncologist to us. Our Vet said she's one of the best so hopefully its true and she can help.

Thank you so much for sharing Trudy's story. It give me hope especially since she lives for many years after. We have talked about removal of the tumors, but because of the position and place of the tumors our doctor doesn't feel he'd be able to remove EVERY piece of the tumors. We've talked amputation, but our vet feels it's best to go with a specialist someone who has dealt with this more to give us our best options. Do you mind me asking how come Trudy didnt do chemo or radiation? Did you guys choose not? Do you have any recommendation of good articles or websites that helped you with Trudy's journey [MENTION=15364]oscarmayer[/MENTION] ?

Hi Vicky, I'm so sorry you're going through this with Chelios. I don't have any experience with this, but I just want to say you are in my thoughts and prayers. I hope you are able to find a good vet or specialist that has experience with this type of tumour, and they are able to treat Chelios. I'll be looking for your updates.
