hip corrective surgery for puppy Moose

Hi all! I'm interested to hear if anyone here has had a TPO (triple pelvic osteotomy) on their puppy. TPO surgery is used to prevent the severe arthritis of the hips caused by hip dysplasia

My 4 mo old pup has had an x-ray that shows severely displasic hips. I don't want a lame Moose! (Yes he's a big boy weighing in at 36 lbs) More importantly I want him to have a good quality of life. He is quite listless and doesn't act like a puppy should (I should note he's my 1st Bulldog) That's what took us to the vet in the fist place.

So....cost? How taxing was the recovery for dog and owner? Did it effect dogs temperament? Anything you have to add would be helpful!

We haven't been to a specialists yet, so they may not even reccomend TPO for Moosey. I'm not sure it's financially an option for us. This has been a heartbreaking revelation!

I am sorry this has happened to your Moose. I have not had experience with this,but I would definitely speak to the breeder and discuss this problem with them. This can be,and most of the time is hereditary. I would take him to a specialist and have them read the xrays. Getting a second opinion would be necessary(I believe)
He does seem very young to have this severe a problem. If the specialist agrees that he needs surgery now, perhaps you can investigate all the options that may be available for the cost. I am sorry I am of no further help,but I will be praying for your little boy.

I have never had to have this surgery, but my girl, Banks had very bad hips and we were able to maintain her weight and manage the pain. I agree with Tracey and Lynn --- very very young for this type of surgery.

Look into a second opinion, definitely.

Please keep us posted on your boy... sending lots of healing prayers all goes well.

I would see a specialist and have a seasoned veteran do this surgery if needed.

Young dogs that have NOT yet developed arthritis are candidates.

My friend got TPO done on her German Shepard when he was just about 10 months. He jumped up to catch a frisby, fell bad on his hip and knocked it out of socket.
It's been a long recovery for him. While he's doing great, i think full recovery is around a year.
I want to say she paid around $1500.
Her vet wanted to send her to the vet school and they wanted to charge her $3000.
