hi my name is Scott new to the web-site....i have had english Bulldogs all my life.....i have a 4 year old male.....largest Bulldog i have ever owned. 74 pounds, for the last couple months, when he wakes up from a deep sleep...he shakes his head real hard. even thru-out the night sometimes...my wife & i will always get up and clean his ears....and there will be fluid in both of them, we have taken him to the vet and he gave us ear drops, but that does not seem to help. what could be the problem?

When If first read the heading of this thread I immediately thought of idiopathic head tremors. Stupid question probably but is he definitely shaking his head because of the fluid in his ears or could it be tremors?? If it is the fluid that is aggravating him then I think it may be time to find a second opinion from another vet or push your current vet into looking into this a little bit more.

When he isn't shaking his head how is he acting ... as normal or is he lethargic, listless, quiet etc

no he really didn't say, just gave us some ear drops & antibiotic's......who knows !! but we will just have to take him in again this weekend... DR. BUTCHKO is the vet out of riverside Ca, we have been taking our Bulldogs to him for years now.......my wife took him this last trip.....the dog is as playful as can be......eats good and everything......but man does he shake his head when he gets up......it's almost freighting ! he's an indoor dog....only goes outside for walks around the block !

Welcome to EBN! Well you are going to one of the most highly respected bully vets in so cal (I am in so cal too) so I don't doubt he knows what he's doing. Hmmm I don't know what to suggest but going back and trying to get a better idea what it is. Only thing I could possible think to suggest is my Samson had an ear infection for 6 months straight (April-October 2010). Some people here had mentioned that potatoes may cause yeast to grow which is a problem because I feed a grain free food and almost all grain free foods have potatoes in them. EXCEPT Natures Variety Instinct so I tried feeding him that and the ear infections cleared up, 4 months later still infection free. His ears always looked dirty though when he had his ear infections not any type of fluid.

Welcome Scott! Your bully is so cute! We had that problem with our first bully Cassie. There aren't a lot of vets around here that know a lot about bullies in my area. I was told she had very small ear canals and she would always be prone to ear infections and lots of gunk and the only thing I could do was clean them in the morning and evening and use OtiClense on them. Welcome to our group! I've been to Dr. Butchko, and I live in the Phoenix area! I have a friend who breeds EBs in Yucaipa and she recommended Dr. Butchko to me years ago when I needed fertility advise with another breed I was breeding. He actually taught me how to A.I. He is a wonderful vet. We were there on a Sat. and the waiting room was FULL of EBs! I agree, take a video and so you can show him exactly what he does. Your boy is very handsome!

This is Scott's wife, Karen. I know Scott's concerned about Barclay's ears. We got him fixed about 6 months ago and had a cherry eye repair on the same visit. It took 5 workers at the vet to hold him down when they gave him the meds to calm him down before they took him in. He's really strong! Butchko did a great job on the cherry eye surgery.

Shaking his head? I feel so sorry for him when he shakes his head at night. It seems to be some liquid from the inner ears. I usually use a tissue and softly twist it in the ears to get the liquid out and his ears dry. As soon as I do that, he goes right back to sleep. Unfortunately, he wakes up about 2 to 3 times per night and I'll have to do this. He seems to enjoy the relief.
I need to get him back into Butchko soon. Thanks for all your help!

please go get a second and third opinion, because he will give himself blood clots in the ears then become a cauliflower ear, , watch his ears for swelling, because he will need to be drained quickly. - there must be something going on ! go to a specialist please. ASAP
what a sweetheart, I have had two big boys, no three. right around the 70 to 75 lb mark, Buff too, but big.
let me know what is going on. and -- what kind of food is he on? allergies to food start in the ears and paws usually.
