Help Needed! Cherry Eye Surgery

Watson is going to need Cherry Eye surgery, his cornea is starting to get cloudy because of it and I've been combing this thread for all the info I can get before going to talk to an ophthalmologist. I'm so worried about putting him under, he's about to turn 4 and we just moved to a new area so we aren't familiar with all of the local surgeons. I saw that I should ask how many cherry eye surgeries they've done, ask about the gas or mild sedative anesthesia, I did see that the surgeon has a french bulldog as a pet so he must know something about the brachy breeds, but I never want to assume either. Any other advice or suggestions?? Thank you so much!!

It sounds like you have all the right questions down, just make sure you find a vet that you're comfortable with and I'm sure it'll go just fine! I swear the surgery was more traumatic for me than it was for Murray.

Well if you have an eye specialist for Watson you're on the right track. You can also call the veterinary universities and ask them if they have a list of their eye specialist for dogs in your area. Ive worked with universites back home and you sure can call them for any info for any specialist humans or dogs or lawyers etc. Be persistent. Also tell them you're new in the area and you're worry cause you dont know any vets.

[MENTION=10950]sndpiper[/MENTION] Ask if they have an oxygen tank on site, and if they are able to keep him overnight, if needed. Also ask if someone will be with him at all times after surgery until he's up and breathing on his own, comfortably.
I almost lost my pup because he was sent home too soon after surgery. He spent 3 days in an oxygen tank at our local emergency vet clinic.

Thank you so much for your responses. We visited two doc's and decided to go with the one that does a heavy sedation, not intubation/anesthesia. I felt so much better going in there with at least somewhat of an idea of what would be good for our pup. Surgery is May 26!
