Oh and ladies who asked. I believe the flashing avatar is a .gif. You can create one using a photo editing program (they used to be available online for free) that creates animated gifs. you take whatever pictures you want to use and superimpose them on each other so they flash. It's the same way they get eyes to blink and such in gifs. two pictures that are very similar with eyes open and eyes closed and you get blinking eyes....
Now all this said. I have not done this myself for pics, I'm just relating what I was told by someone who does and who I had do some animations for me a while back.

thanks for the welcome! i can feel the warmth despite ocean apart 
ninoy (left) is red & white, macoy has some brindle patches at the back.
about the avatar hehehe! i think i just made it from photofunia site long time ago...
