I have never heard or seen a dog have a tattoo... I'm getting ready to google this lol....
I would have to say I'm all for tattoos but not for my fur baby!

Our second bulldog Dulce belonged to a breeder and came to us after he abandon her at the vet's office. (Dulce passed June 27, 2013 at the age of 8+ yrs from liver failure.) /Her C-section was an emergency spay. The puppies were dead. We brought her home a few days later after being told she "might not live". This story is long. Three or so months later the scabs and dry skin from healing are mostly gone and my husband noticed that her belly had an odd mark. She had a number tat on her belly.

I would do it helped me reunite with them, though mine are microchipped. I have lots of tattoos; they don't hurt much after they are done. Only hurts while it is being done.
I assume if it was done to a dog under light anesthesia during the actual tattooing he would not feel much when healing. Its like a mild road rash. I think a tattoo is much less invasive than the ear cropping and tail docking that most people don't bat an eyelash about.

Most spay and neuter clinics around here tattoo the females(just a small green line,) to show that they have been spayed. I took some barn cats there once.
