I just discovered this last night! Part of Louie’s paw pad is gone and there is a little flap hanging! Wtf!!! It must be somewhat recent but there’s no wound or injury and it doesn’t hurt him. He hasn’t been on hot pavement. His other pads are fine. How the hell does this happen?

He just cut it. Must of been playing and stepped on something. Use vet wraps and add bag balm if you have any or polysporin for a few days then air it out.

Ouch! Any stones he would be walking on?

There are river rocks in my backyard but we’ve lived here almost 2 years so I’d be surprised if that’s what it’s from. We did go to a farmers market last weekend. I guess he could have stepped on something. But there’s been no yelp or blood. So I guess whatever happened didn’t cause him too much pain.

So I know paw pads don’t grow back so is this foot going to be more sensitive with a piece missing?

Okay maybe they do grow back. I thought they didn’t but the Google is saying they do. I guess we’ll see!

Poor Louie! I've never seen that before - looks like he's shedding his skin. Hope he'll be fine soon!

You could put a wet tea bag on it(tannic acid) or use a zinc cream. Or maybe just check it-drawing attention to it may start him licking, which would be worse.

Thankfully he’s not even bothered by it so I’ll just keep an eye on it and keep it clean.

They do grow back just slowly. He’ll get a thin layer of skin first then it will thicken within time. Skin always has a way to repair itself. :)

I think he first got his skin thickened because of something (it formed like a dry blister), because pad around looks whitish. I think it was kind of hyperkeratosis, and then it just broke because it became brittle. His paw isn’t sore because this thickened skin was already apart from underplaying layer for quite some time and naked skin under blister matured. I think more pieces around will come off and everything will heal.
