Canelo
With the weather cooling Canelo has been so energetic, even bouncing off the patio furniture playing with other dogs and the vacuum. Yesterday he started limping, at first I thought it was all the bouncing but later in the day I found he had broken a toe nail. It's broken up into or very close to the quick. The nail is long too, painful so I haven't messed much with it. My thought I need to leave it alone and keep an eye on it but would like to hear your thoughts. I've thought about soaking his foot in warm water with Epsom salt but it turns into a battle with Canelo. The only time he likes to go in water is when it's dirty, muddy and there may be a snake around. Thank!

I have never had to deal w/this so I'm going to tag some members...

Brutus' nails split alot. I leave them alone. He has one right now. I just keep a close eye on it to make sure it doesn't get infected. He usually will nibble off the split part.

Vegas split his nail to the quick coming in the back door, he was limping. I took him to PetSmart and had them dremel his nail short. It really helped a lot.

Same here, no worries

not to use it now but buy one of those dremels basic grinder model 7300 - use it weekly to shave/grind the nails so it does not get long. He'll get use to it.

Thanks I'll get one. I can get three nails clipped and he's done. We've been watching his foot to make sure he's fine. I hate seeing him limp but it is what it is. Husband says I baby him too much. I say Husband is just jealous, lol.

I too use a Dremel and have never had a spit nail, hope it works well for you. Remember to grind lightly so the nail doesn't become too hot.

This hasn't happened to Ruckus, but did happen to his best friend Sadie the mutt...her nail got stuck in my rug and it ripped it partially off. We took her to the vet and they cleaned it and clipped it and said to keep it clean and watch it for infection.

OUCH... that looks like it hurts, what is the black around the 'toe' ?

It's dried blood. He won't let me touch his foot much.

My recommendation would be to take him to the vet and have them trim it up if possible, especially if he won't let you touch it.
