Why the fear, in my opinion, years and years of propaganda of how you’re going to get sick from handling raw meats

A lot of butchers would be dead by now

Like me selling my eggs and not washing them. In Europe we don’t wash eggs. They leave it on the counter for over a month. My dogs always have/had a raw egg a day, shell and all.

All the butchers are non existence , in my area. There is one who covers a 5mile radius, and that's not rural. As for eggs there is no way I would feed Jeffo a raw egg from a super market, he does have eggs but they are hard boiled, a bit different if you keep your own chickens though.

Yeah! This is the part of my last post that I'm more interested in, the Fear. We all know about the Vets, and liability. There are plenty of people out there that would like to feed raw, but never feed it because of fear, they are so afraid of their dog becoming sick, or worse, and yes it can happen. I've spoken to many dog owners over decades on this, and there is one thing that comes up all the time. (I tried it and he/she was really sick with raw) every time I ask the same question, what was the temp in the larder fridge? answer(It was normal) what's normal, (don't know) and that in my opinion is the biggest problem with raw. People don't adjust their larder fridge, to 0-4 degrees the dial usually sits in the middle= temp to high, Raw goes off very quickly, pup becomes seriously sick. And in my opinion the whole scenario of raw is owners/carers simple mistake, will they ever admit it, no chance. Do your homework on suppliers, talk to people who feed raw.

I can't wrap my head around people that cook meat for themselves and then say to me they are afraid to server raw to the dog.

I buy frozen small batch for my guys... it stays frozen till I use it, defrost three bags at a time and last about four days

I gave up on getting my head around people, asking about raw, along time ago. You just know whatever, you say and how much info you give them, it ain't going to happen. Because they are stuck in fear mode.

Right!? We actually are seeing a growth in small farmers and butchers in our area. It’s awesome

Yeah! I understand the liability, so the sack load of that stuff in the corner of the waiting room, that they promote and sell, and three months later poor pup is back, with a load of allergies and they empty your wallet again. what I don't understand, why owners/carers are so fearful of feeding raw, and it shows on this forum, on some threads, even if you give them all the info on how and what to feed including the correct temp when defrosted, and suppliers. maybe I'm missing something, maybe some of the members that are fearful of raw could tell me?? I may understand more then.

Many years ago when raw was rarely heard of and no google around i wasn’t happy with dog food, in all honesty cat food at that time would have been better for dogs as they are obligate carnivores. I often cooked meat for my dogs as I did for my cats.
Somehow I ended up with a friends snake , snakes are fed raw mice of course and thinking about that for a while i started thinking how raw meat is a dogs natural diet.
So speaking with a vet who was definitely not impressed! She gave me stern lectures about salmonella and god knows what else knowing nobody else who raw fed I took her seriously and never considered it again.
I don’t think back then you could actually buy raw specifically for dogs, we didn’t have google to research lol.
Only recently after much more knowledge about it and asking for advice on here I wanted to change Freya to raw but she has some disorder I can’t remember it’s weird sounding name! The vets told me a plant based diet with certain supplements and fish was the only option for her.

I do wonder at times should i gradually have introduced raw but because her stomach issues are really bad i didn’t want to take any chances.

I use a farm shop, its about a 20mile round trip, but a great deal better than the one and only Butcher

It was your reply that made me laugh. Like I killed them all

I as well have a raw pet farm. Ratio all done for you. I buy with my sons and end up buying 15 boxes (40lb per box) in one pounder rolls. Comes out around 1.90$ per pound. Can’t complain.

Yeah! we have similar size boxes (metric) I buy 40 rolls = 20kgs one roll is about 1lb or 500grms perfect for Jeffo one a day plus the other add ins.....Are you sure you didn't kill them off? Just noticed feed frozen? never done that, always defrost.

All raw producer will say feed from frozen to protect their business . And it’s a regulations from Health Canada and FDA in the USA. But, it’s up to the owners to do what they want.

Right! we don't have that in the UK, on the roll labels it gives the temps, and how long to keep it when defrosted. Must admit don't think I would ever feed it frozen. be interesting to know if any member does, and if they have ever had problems?

When I started to feed raw to all 3 EB and a previous German Shepherd, it was from frozen. Days might have thawed a tad but definitely frozen. I used a lot of tripe which in Canada, if you want to sell tripe, you need an inspector standing beside you while you’re processing it. I fed from frozen for years. Nothing ever happened either to any of the dogs. About a few years ago, I saw my son thawing it out in the fridge and their dogs were fine as well. I started doing the same. Also Nyala lost her top front teeth cause one day she wanted to put Jake in his place, she got nasty and bit him around the neck I think it was, he just looked at her very nonchalant, turned around and walked away. Well that loosened her top teeth. Ended up removing them teeth and was easier for her to eat thawed out.

Funny how the brain works, my first thought, on seeing feed from frozen, was that must be a mistake on the label. Interesting though, think Jeffo would just look at me if I chucked it in his bowl, frozen.
