on and off cherry eye

From the time he is with us, he's had on and off cherry eye (happened maybe 4-5 times now). First time it popped out it lasted only for a few mins. then it was gone. I immediately contacted the breeder and she said not to worry her line never had a cherry eye problem and that it only appears after vigorous chewing. Fine, it really did happen after he was chewing on something, i've forgotten what it was already. But then i noticed it's now taking longer to settle back to normal everytime his cherry eye pops out. Yesterday it happened at around 6 in the evening and didn't disappear till we went to sleep, the longest so far. Took pictures and emailed the breeder today. His health contract is about to expire. only have a month left.

I want to avoid surgery as much as possible as i read surgery would make the eyes dry as an aftereffect. Also afraid of putting him under because there's no Bulldog specialist vet. here (even scared of having him x-rayed for Hip Dysplaysia because he needs to be mildy sedated). My question is when does it warrant to be worried about this condition? When do i consider surgery, which i'm trying to avoid as much as possible? I'm now waiting for whatever excuse the breeder is going to give me now.

You can have it removed without going under
If a breeder tells you he never had a puppy with a cherry eye -i would be worried ,there isnt a breeder that Havant had 100% of puppies that a healthy (im talking about few lines not one litter) -i would see a bully vet to asses the dog do the scanned before his health guarantee runs out-and then get the breeder to fulfil his contract
Lilly had her cherry as a result of an accident -my dog loves to claw other dogs , but we decided on a tuck in surgery rather than removal
We recently scanned and health tested her and its all good

When it doesn't go back in for a day or so, that is when you will need to get it fixed. Find a good bully vet or eye specialist that has done bulldogs before to do the surgery. If they do it properly, it will not give him dry eye.

I think its a laser removal -but just to be sure ask your vet about your options and your concerns and to refer you to eye specialist we never done the removal we opted for a tuck in instead
I would do it sooner rather than later-as with exrays and cherry it might take some time -depending on a vet practice x so breeder have no chances for pulling out of the contract ,ask vet to give his diagnosis on paper and email it to the breeder

do i need to worry now? at the moment it still goes in within the day. it'll be hard to look for eye specialist that has done bulldogs here because the breed is not that popular here yet. My best bet is to go to universities.

I hate cherry eye. My first EBD had it in both eyes. My vet wanted to fix it ( without the guarantee that it would not return ) 600 per eye.

I agree with [MENTION=9105]Pati Robins[/MENTION] and [MENTION=2071]Davidh[/MENTION]

When Blue first got his, we were able to get in back in for awhile. When the second one came out, we went to an animal hospital and had an Ophthalmologist do it.
But we decided to get it tucked instead of removed.

Depending on the doctor, some will say tucking reduces the chances of dry eye down the road, others say tucked or removed carry the same risks. Who knows who's right..

Brutus had it in both eyes. When it first happened we could get it back in. Eventually it stayed out. He had both tucked but one kept popping so it had to be removed. His eyes look great now. Frankie had his redone before we got him and honestly it looks so different then brutus'. Brutus had his done by his vet who is wonderful.

if you do have surgery make sure they don' remove the 3rd eye lid (the cherry eye) because it contains one of the lacrimal ducts which put fluid into the eye otherwise your dog will suffer permanent dry eye.Which could lead to blindness if eye drops/ointment are not given for the rest of their lives.
They need to tuck in the cherry eye back in place.

My frenchton has a cherry eye that makes an appearance here and there. Over the years we learned how to make it go away. We take a baby wipe and gently wipe the corner of his eye in a downward motion and 99% of the time it goes away. The only time it does not go away is when he has allergies. We give him Benadryl a And wait an hour then repeat the baby wipe process. It has worked for us for last 4 years because we can make it go away we never saw a point in surgery.

Sorry didnT know this thread is still active lol. Thank you guys for your tips! We haven't been to a specialist yet because i want to go to Leipzig University which is about 2- 3 hours drive from here. There they have a vet who specializes on brachycephalic dogs and we would be able to get a hold of an opthalmologist too. I cant drive and my husband doesnt have any freetime yet but im very much aware time is clicking.
