HELP PLEASE - Tummy Troubles???

Joey will be :assurred:A-ok mom,I have given the same remedy to a few of my dogs at times. We send our love :luv:

Glad that vet thinks its just acid reflux !! What was Joey eating? Food allergies can contribute to this. Once Joey is doing better on the bland diet you can try switching to a commercial product. I would try to give smaller more frequent meals that are lower in fat and protein- maybe a dehydrated raw such as Honest Kitchen, Sojos, EasyRaw?

First, thank you for your input and help! :) Joey has always been on kibble, Life's Abundance, with a little shredded cheese (which now will be OUTLAWED for her, apparently high fat foods will exacerbate the acid reflux. After going off the bland diet the vet suggested that I continue then to introduce her regular kibble back in, with the boiled rice and chicken, little bit at at time until we're back to all kibble. I guess if her symptoms return it's time for a change.

Oh thank you Lynn!!!! It is so comforting to hear about other bully babies that have had the same thing. I guess sometimes we will just NEVER KNOW why it started.....right?

UPDATE

Joey had one episode last evening, not a bad one though. We both SLEPT THROUGH THE NIGHT!!! So happy!! I gave her the second pepcid around 10pm She ate her dinner of boiled chicken and rice and loved it....of course :)

The only pepcid that my sister could find at the store this time was Maximum Strength. I could not find a big difference between the 2 so I did give her one today. Perhaps only one today instead of 2 ??

Does anyone know? Maximum Strength vs Pepcid AC regular?

sisters3 I have always used the generic pepcid (famitodine). I would look at the ingriedients (sp,?) and see what the difference is, as compared to the regular, that you gave her. What makes it max? According to your statement, it is not that much different. So, see how she does with one. If needed, give her another a little later than usual.

Thank you Lynn, I actually CALLED the number on the Pepcid website to be absolutely sure (yes bulldog Mom here) They told me that in a 20mg tablet of the Maximum Strength there is 20mg of famitodine and in the regular strength Pepcid 20mg tablet there is 10mg of famitodine, so that is the difference.

Now I gave Joey a max strength this morning and she is tolerating it fine BUT I will have the regular strength in a few hours.

So.......if I give her a regular strength tonight she will have had 30mg famitodine for the day.

Per her vet "20mg tablet twice per day" but that only equates to 20mg total of famitodine........

Perhaps I will just hold off on giving this evening and resume with regular strength in the morning.....

Thoughts?

Thank you!!

I would recommend switching to dehydrated raw if it's within your budget. If not, switch her to smaller more frequent meals, and switch to a different protein than what she was on before, preferably grain free.

Dose of famotidine in vet manual is 0.5-1 mg/kg every 12-24 hours. So if Joey weighs 20 kg ( 44 pound ) that would be 10-20mg once or twice daily. Since you want to go with the vets dose, which is 20mg twice daily or 40 mg per day, then give 2 x 10mg or 1 x 20 mg Max tab per dose, twice daily.

High fats won’t produce acid reflux unless it’s process food. Wild animals eat tons of fats and we all know they don’t have acid reflux. All of this boils down to Joey’s food. Her food has chicken meal...n a few grains. There’s something in her food she’s having issues with. Like Dollys Owner suggested, I personally would go dry raw n see what happens. Nyala use to ā€œlick the airā€ daily for months. Since she’s been eating raw she has completely stopped. She does have 2/3 cups of lamb acana here n there...

Is this what Joey is eating?

Dollys Owner Thank you so much for the information! I will be exploring new diet for Joey!
helsonwheels Helene! GREAT information on the fats, I know so little about nutrition, so confusing and I so want to do what’s best for Joey. Yes that is her food BUT she eats the GRAIN FREE all life stages. Thoughts please?

MAJOR UPDATE

I can’t believe this.

Joey continued having episodes, although less, on Pepcid and bland diet. Then this happened:

We got a bunch of snow yesterday and in the afternoon I took Joey out to potty. Well she loves the snow, started hopping around and then we headed up the hill behind the house. Half way up she stopped and started heaving......then she puked up this WAD of stuff I cannot describe! Fur ball? ISH......... Some rice.....

She hasn’t had an episode since!! Her nose hasn’t been cool and moist in days!!!

I am so thankful! She’s still in bed so.......hopefully still fine.

I can’t believe it! Fur from toys? Paws? Who knows.........Possible that she was nauseated and needed to puke ???

Fantastic news ! If she's ok now I guess you don't need to switch foods unless she's exhibiting signs of allergies such as licking paws and scratching ears. I still think it's better to rotate between a few proteins if you can.

Thanks so much!! I REALLY REALLY REALLY hope that it is over now. BUT I still want to be sure that I am doing the best for Joey. I will continue to update.

QUESTION, when you say rotate between a few different proteins.....Do you mind giving me an example? SORRY but I really don't know a ton about the nutrition end of things. Joey is 3.5 years old and has never had any issues.

Looking forward to learning MORE :)

Aha!! I did ask if something was stuck in her throat!!! Which of course you wouldn’t necessarily be able to tell. Hopefully that’s all it was and everything goes back to normal now.

Rotating protein means switch flavors/meat source. For example, Louie rotates between salmon, duck, pork, kangaroo and goat. I get 4 lb bags as he only eats kibble in the am and I have read that kibble starts to oxidize after 2 weeks so when he finishes a bag, he gets a different flavor.
