Hello! Here for palette and nare info.

Hello! I have joined your forum because I am desperate for information. I need to locate a veterinary surgeon that is skilled at nare and soft palette surgery. I actually own a French Bulldog and she is having a lot of trouble breathing in air through her nose, she also gags and throws up food and constantly yawns, you can hear the soft palette rattling. She hold her head back as far as she can and readjusts her body trying to breath. She is my heart and soul and I am terrified of something happening to her during surgery, I know there is a possibility of complications. I am trying to locate the best possible care I can give her to make her quality of life better. Someone who has good experience with brachycephalic breeds. I live in southern West Virginia and am open to driving up to 4 hours away into NC PA OH VA TN to ensure she gets good care. I have tried to google for surgeons but only seem to be finding websites for vets that are too far away. If anyone has any info please post the vet name and location or website link. Thank you so much! I am sorry to bother you guys here but I love this dog with all my heart and need to help her.

Me again! I wanted to add that I did contact Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, VA, they are about an hour away from me. They said they could give her a consult with a board certified soft tissue surgeon. But they had no info on how much experience he has doing nares and soft palette surgery. Has anyone been there?

I have never been where you have mentioned. If your dog is sounding like she has mucous, you could give her a squirt of lemon juice down her throat(from the fake lemon) and see if it clears up some. If you give your location, someone here many know of a place closer to you, that could help your baby.

Hey! I’m in the southern most part of West Virginia. It sounds like fabric whipping in the wind or something when she gets to playing and starts panting. I can also hear it occasionally when she is resting. Can also hear her sucking hard for air through her nares when she’s sleeping.

Good thing you plan to have her evaluated, and if she is to have the surgery done, make sure you choose not only an experienced vet but also a 24/7 facility where she can stay over night after the surgery.

Castor had this procedure done when he was 1.5 years old at a big vet hospital. They shaved his chest before surgery as the throat might swell after the procedure; if that happens, they need to intubate very quickly. Therefore, he stayed over night so that they could keep an eye on him.

Sorry I am in MI and don't have any info on surgeons in VA. It sounds like you need to do something sooner than later. If it were me i would start researching the vets with the best reviews within a couple hours of you. Then start calling every single one and ask them the questions. Do they perform this procedure? How many have they done? Particularly on this breed. Can you get referrals from previous patients, etc.

You may find that a lot of vets perform this procedure and some may have a lot of experience with this breed. They just might not be listed on the web as a specialist.

Have you found a veterinary surgeon for the surgery? I am taking my bulldog to the VSC clinic in Leesburg, VA for a consult in April on getting his nares repaired.
