I thought Walter was growling while he was falling asleep but seeing that it's when he's already asleep...how ADORABLE!! (not a very helpful response to your post, I know).

I would make him sleep where he has free run at the front door, just on the off chance some yahoo comes a knocking in the middle of the night.
