hello everyone, I just registered with this forum because I know its a place where I can get answers from people in the know. I was surprised to see an issue that another forum member was having and this is why I am replying. My 8 year old male is overweight and its my fault but its something now I have to deal with. If I continue this form of feeding I know he will die soon. The problem is the amount o f food I am giving him. I cook his meals mostly chicken and rice, pumpkin, fresh vegetables and the freeze dried stuff that has every important ingredient in it. He started panting heavily at night and was warm to touch so I made it very cool in the bedroom. Fans and open windows doesn't seem to help. I put cold wash cloths under his neck and his body. The problem is that he doesn't sleep. This panting keeps him and myself awake each night. I have brought him to the vet and was checked out and without doing a thorough check. X-rays, blood and stool panel they didn't tell me much. This Vetenerian wanted one thousand dollars for this. I am in Santa Rosa CA where Vets have the highest charges for their services in the US. I am on Social Security I barely make enough to pay my small amount monthly bills. Like this thread I believe its a heart issue. but not certain. He pants all night long then when the sunrise happens he finally falls asleep but not for long. Oh and all day long I can tell he's really tired but he doesn't want to lie down. I find him sitting up trying to rest his head on something so he can try falling asleep. The vet prescribed Gabapatin to help him sleep gave it to him just once and it was a nightmare. He was still panting heavily but was trying to sleep at the same time. He wouldn't wake up It was just awful. So I tried Benadryl to help him sleep and it didn't nothing. This is causing me so much stress because it hurts me seeing him like this. I know for sure it's something serious and I wish I could afford. So my last hope is coming here to hear what others might have to say before I finally have to make that dreadful decision because if I can't turn this around for him I don't want him to have to live like this any longer. Thank You Mark Silvia

Cut back on or remove the rice and add green beans. It will help him lose some weight

It does sound like it could be heart or palate related both would require expensive tests and possibly surgery

Sending you both prayers.

Thank you for responding with your comment. I will try this thank you again

First, welcome to EBN. :welcome4: You will find many here who will chime in and provide comments, solutions, and support. By the way, Bentley is a beautiful lad.

Second, I found and article in PetMD that may help you in your next steps. Don't be alarmed with your reading but become knowledgeable Please see: https://www.petmd.com/dog/symptoms/dog-breathing-heavy
This may help you in your next course of action.

Third, I can understand the hefty price tag for vet visits as California has high everything there like gasoline, income and property taxes. I know I used to live there many moons ago and my daughters still do.

I hope this helps.
