I was trying to figure out if taking Bruno to the groomer every six weeks was a good idea. After I got them back this time apparently they didn't dry his tail pocket very good and it got all nasty. I'm trying to get it cleaned up. So I did a search and that wasn't much help. This thread has anything from once or twice a week to once or twice a year and everything in between.

I find what works best for us is mal-a-ket wipes. It clears the yeast up in a few days. But you really need to get in there and get all of it out.

We use the same! Works best for pockets. Or some TUCKS (which are basically just witch hazel soaked pads) - Also, if you are grooming, be sure to either stay with him or make sure they know the breed. Heard way to many horror stories lately regarding bullies dying in the hands of groomers.

TyTysmom yep, after Blue's tail issue (very infected and yeasty) we stopped using the Douxo and started the mal-a-ket wipes. I'm surprised at how much better they worked for us. I'm guessing it's because they contain Ketoconazole in addition to the Chlorhexidine.

I have Been using witch hazel hemorrhoid wipes. It seem to be working I'm trying to clean it 2x a day. I'm worried about over doing it with the witch hazel.

You need to kill whatever's causing the yeast/infection.
Witch hazel won't kill it. No idea about the hemorrhoid wipes..

agree -- if the yeast is there, witch hazel will not clear it up -- that is more for daily maintenance. Baths -- I do twice a year or if they had happen to roll in the mud for the heck of it, then it is as needed only.

I take Wally to the groomer about every 6-8 weeks. Mostly because I'm allergic to dogs, and I do fine on my allergy shots but for some reason wet dog hair really makes me itchy.

This is what the witch hazel pads look like after cleaning his tail pocket.

Oh my!! You may want to go to the vet and make sure that is not getting infected. That looks really sore..... But he is too cute , that face in the first photo is adorable!

It looks a lot better after three days of cleaning it. It was slimy and crusty. We do have a vet appointment on the 11th for hopefully his last scraping from the mites. Do you think I should call and move his appointment up?

Crazy Momma that I am, I would be --

It's probably a mix of bacteria and yeast.. it usually is <sigh>.. the witch hazel isn't killing it.

Since his tail is so red, I would stop cleaning it for now. You don't want to irritate it anymore. And yes, I would also see the vet as soon as I could. I'm sure it's hurting the little guy :(

Just got home from the vet $240 later. Took a sample from around his tail pocket and his ears found a little bit a yeast in his ears nothing in the tail pocket it was totally clean. They gave me mometamax ointment for his ears and told me to put a little bit in his tail pocket.
