Frankie & Louie
I have 2 British bulldog puppies now 12 weeks. Louie & Frankie. Both brothers. I was looking for advice on feeding. I started introducing raw food into their diet at. 10 weeks however Frankie developed an infection and his poo’s had blood in them for a good while. The vet advised me to stop with the raw as it has a lot of bacteria and not good for the pups at this age. I have started giving them dr John’s as it’s high in protein. Is this a good alternative? This has been a week now since starting dr John’s kibble and Frankie’s poos are still quite watery. I’ve been advised to re worm him and gave him the pro-kolin paste. The blood occasionally comes but is not as bad as it was. Could someone let me know if the dr John’s stuff is ok? And how much should I be feeding the boys a day? I’m currently feeding them 4 small meals a day approx 70g each per meal. Is this enough? Or too little ? Also how do I stop them from eating each other’s poo

Any help appreciated.

Hi and welcome to the forum! I don't know anything about the kibble you mention, but my Castor eats a British Brand called Canagan which is good, and he did well in James Wellbeloved too a few years ago. He is a senior, though, so does not eat their puppy kibble which is what your boys are after.

Hello & WELCOME!!

A lot of us feeds a raw diet to our dogs. Never had issues. Bacteria is kind of pushing it. I’m in the food industry n work with inspectors n inspected myself throughout the year. Bacteria issue is mostly caused by cross contamination. If you buy from a reputable company n not one that contract’s out extremely rare there’s any problem. In the wild puppies definitely eat meat. Vets knows that. If your dog has blood in his stools n it’s BRIGHT red it’s stress. If it’s dark red/brown get a blood check as that’s not good. Does Louie play rough with Frankie? My brindle played very rough with my previous dog which had him as a pup. He had bright red blood mixed in his stools for a couple months. We kept an eye on their playing n slowly it went away. I had it analyzed n had nothing to do with the food. Back then both were on Acana which you do have in the UK n I was also topping with raw organs. I don’t know Dr John kibbles. Pumpkin organic purĆ©e is great to get stool back on track. NOT the one for pies. One ingredient only pumpkin. Your dog eats 2 cups per day (224gr). Puppies should be eating 3 cups a day. But before adding more, Frankie’s stools needs to get back on track. What was the raw you added n how much?

Hi and welcome to the forum :) We have been feeding our 15 week old puppy Wesley on raw since the day we brought him home, its our first time feeding raw, our previous bully Dudley was started on kibble until he had kidney stone problems then had to have a wet diet as kibble can concentrate a dog urine due to its lack of moisture which leads to kidney stones (not something we knew at the time)

I have to say the advice from your vet would probably lead me to believe he’s not a pro raw advocate ? A lot of vets aren’t! Luckily ours is a raw feed specialist and he has never advised against giving Wesley raw as a pup.
That said we are having some teething trouble with certain proteins ā€œPorkā€ is a main culprit and will give Wes a runny bum! And that did worry us at the very beginning especially with a pup and not knowing if it was an illness causing the issue or his food! Don’t worry we all panic at the first sign our bully’s arent feeling well :D

What i would suggest is to keep a spreadsheet for each day to keep a track on what your boys are eating including any treats or chews they have and also how many times they go poop! And more importantly what was the state of the poop! :D

This might all seem a bit over the top but believe me it really does help to see any patterns that form day to day and able to see what has caused it, it how we noticed the Pork wasn’t great for Wes.
You would be amazed how quickly you forget wether your pup was or wasn’t ok with a food they had a couple of weeks ago!

We have a grading system for poops :D

1. Liquid
2. Soft
3. Perfect
4. Hard

Find a good quality raw which should say on the packet what percentage of meat/offal/bone is in the food you should be looking for 80%/10%/10% Paleo Ridge seems to be working well for us.

Hope you get your boys back on track soon!

Just realize you’re the right person to know what brands in UK. I too I always make sure people rotate proteins purposely to see IF any allergies to note it down in a journal. We do forget. Very rare there will allergies as a pup as puppies are still protected with mom’s milk. The biggest health issues in puppies are the shots. Vets are too fast giving all shots immediately n very often too young. IMO shots should be given as of the 12weeks n over.

Regarding pork, the only thing about pork is it’s an animal that eats anything n everything. I would use it but mix it with another protein. The body will get use to it n work itself with the pork. Good you know pork is a stool problem with yours. Like chicken, people are so afraid feeding chicken cause of the allergies problem. But when it’s feed as a puppy, the body gets use to it like it does with any protein. In your case with pork, I would use only like about a tablespoon mixed with his other protein. She what happens.

We are doing exactly that! :D he’s still getting pork but not as a whole meal. We are currently rotating Wes around all the different proteins we can find and will settle on a rota when we find what works best with him.

Cant agree more about vaccines, we didn’t want Wes vaccinated when he was (before 12 weeks ) but annoyingly the breeder insisted, we weren’t happy but not a lot we could do.

Luckily our vet is a leading holistic/raw feed vet and he advised us to leave a longer gap between first and second follow up jab, which we did.

Unfortunately Wes only had 3 weeks on his mothers milk because she got mastitis and was unable feed her pups after that, so may have missed out on some of the benefits and allergy protection.

Have to say so (fingers crossed) we are very happy by the way Wes is doing on his raw diet, hes growing nice and steady and no signs of any other allergy problems and he LOVES his food. He’s also eating fresh fruit and veg treats which we never had any luck with when we tried them with Dudley

Did your vet test his poo for parasites? This might be giardia

The main concern in feeding puppies raw is making sure it is 100% completely balanced. As they get older you can balance over time but the proper nutrition is important for a growing puppy.

We are getting our first Bullie the end of the month. Our other 2 dogs are on Farmer's Dog and I want to put our new little guy on it as well. Is this a good dog food for Bulldogs?

I do not see why you would not
