Entropion Surgery in the AM

Took Einstein to the vet this afternoon because his right eye was really red, itchy and irritated. It's happened before and the vet said his eyelids were rolling in causing irritation. We talked about surgical correction but decided to use drops and rub his face in a downwards motion to try to get the eyelids to roll back down. Well this time there is a small ulcer forming and the vet wanted to do surgery sooner than later. So Einstein is scheduled to have entropion surgery on both eyes in the morning. They told me I could just leave him at the office since we live an hour away. But I couldn't leave him there. So he's snoring away beside me in bed. I can't sleep. The vet assured me this is a fairly common procedure especially in bulldogs. He specializes in bulldogs and he said he just did the same surgery on a bulldog today whose eyes were much worse than Einstein's.

Has anybody elses bulldog had to have this surgery? If so how did it go....did it take awhile for the eyes to heal? Oh boy...my poor man!

Yes, my Wilson has had the same surgery when he was a pup. He also developed a ulcer on one eye. The vet is also a bulldog vet so I trusted him to do the surgery. It will look funny when you see the stitches along the edges of the eyelids but don't be alarmed. After the two weeks they pull the stitches out. They did both eyes and he had to wear a cone at home for two weeks. That was almost three years ago and he has not had any ulcers since. I do have to use drops on him because he also had a cherry eye repair on the same eye. Other than that, the surgery was successful and yes it is a common procedure. I know it's hard to leave them at the vets. I cried every time.

Chunk had this too - I actually had an eye specialist do it. I'm so glad I did because we were in the get every month with an eye issue related to it. After the third time I decided it was worth it, imagine how much pain or discomfort is caused by having eyelashes scratching your eyes all the time?! Chunk healed fast, our guy used dissolvable stitches and he was good in no time. Actually, we actually saw a difference in his playing and energy after the fact! Made me realize it was bothering him more than we knew.

Titan had both eyes done and he recovered within a day. His stitches dissolved. I think of it as an eye lift for dogs. We restricted his play with jameson for two weeks so he wouldnt split the incision. He was in and out of the vet in about six hours

I hope you have great result....that surgery may be in our future....my guy's eyes are borderline...we manage on daily drops of poly neo dex and bi-annual trips to the eye doc to make sure there are no ulcers or problems with the retina....good luck

Thanks everyone. His surgery was scheduled at 10:00. The vet said they try their best not to have to use a cone. Said we'd have to just keep an eye on him. My husband cancelled all our plans this weekend so we can stay home with him. Glad to hear everyone's success stories!

A big for Einstein! He will be feeling better in no time. We had a new thread about this yesterday also. I have never had this problem with Mocha but it is good to learn about these things just in case.

Lucy had the surgery too and did great. If I remember correctly it took about two weeks for everything to heal. Be prepared when you pick him up that he may have some swelling and lots of stitches. I was shocked because my girl looked pretty beat up but she was in great spirits and recovery was a breeze.

Take the cone from the vet just in case--or you may want to see if they have the soft blue ones there that tie. They are great--especially for the short legged pups. If you do get a big plastic one you can trim a few inches off so the pup can walk without tripping on the cone!

As the lids heal they do get itchy so you don't want him to scratch his eyes. My eye specialist was really strict with NO rubbing.

Did you guys get an ointment for after the surgery? Our vet gave us eyedrops yesterday but it was before we knew we were doing the surgery today. I'm not sure what the eyedrops are for. I'm going to call in the morning to find out for sure. I don't want to mess with his eyes unless we need to. But wasn't sure if there was some sort of antibiotic ointment that may help with the itchiness and swelling.

Glad to hear your guy did well. As far as drops--Lucy has dry eye also so she takes cyclosporin and tacrolomis. I don't think he gave us drops/antibiotic ointment for after the surgery. You are right--I would call in the morning just to be sure.
