Help Needed! dont know what to do anymore

My baby will be 12 weeks on friday. I dont think she is getting this house training stuff. I bring her out every hour and and still making mistakes in the house .. She pees in her crate with or without a towel in there. Does not matter if she is in there for 1 hr or 6 hrs she will pee in there. She pees on her bed that is not in her crate.. I praise her and give her treats when she pottys outside .. She does not get water all day.. I do give it to her a few hrs.. If you leave her water all the times she will drink till she throws ups..I brought her to the vet and they said she may have a UTI and put her on antibobies.. She is OBBCESSED with water .. We have another dog that is another breed ans she was potted trained in a few days to a week. Is there anything I am doing wrong? Is there a trick ?

The trick is patience and more time. She is only 3 months old, still a baby, they will not totally get the concept until about 5 or 6 months. Plus the other thing is do not restrict water from a puppy, or adult bully for that matter. They need plenty of water and food to develop and grow properly. Puppies are not for everyone and they take a lot of work and patients. We have a 7 month old here and she is doing pretty well with her potty training, but will still have an accident occasionally. That's just pups. We put down a towel in her crate and if she pees on it we wash it and put another down. They will eventually get it, but you need to be patient.

I've also heard that restricting water can lead to UTI's especially in puppies, Bacon learned quickly initially then we had about a 2.5 month period at 6 months where he went through a full regression peeing and pooping in his day pen. As DavidH said the key is patients, consistency, and praise. When she is in her crate is there just enough room for her to turn around or does she have lots of extra space?

Hi first Maggy moo is a gorgeous pup!.

Hey Don't give up on her, she will get it. She is still so young, Ike is 20 Weeks and has it down now. Very occasionally he will have an accident, but for the most part he is good about going out. Maggy will get it also. About drinking water till she vomits, try keeping her bowl halfway filled all the time, that way she cant over do it at one sitting. Others who have puppies have noticed that their pups will pee when they lay on soft/fluffy material, like a bed or towel. also like [MENTION=4688]Baconator[/MENTION] mentioned. keep her space small in her crate.

I guess try different things with maggy. see how it works out. But remember she is still so young.

Also by your tag line your are a very strong person so I commend you on all you do.

Oh one other thing you can try is getting a slow feed bowl and put her water in that, this way she can't shove her entire face in the bowl and slurp

Dont give up on Maggy. My pup is 16 weeks and finally he is getting the whole concept of peeing outside and not in the house or his crate. Bullies are different from other breeds very stubborn but smart just got to be patience my other dog is a Lab (very easy to train). Also the water gulping could be because she is hungry I saw on another thread you feed her once a day. Please feed her 3 times a day 1 cup each time (gradually get to that amount so it doesn't overwhelm her system). That should curb her drinking she might be trying to fill up her belly. You have great advise above from everybody, If I may add one more thing to it. A puppy at 12 weeks old is only good for about 3 hours, the bladder is small yet. so they are unable to hold that long.

What Davidh said is basically it in a nutshell, there aren't any tricks that I am aware of. I never restrict water, the only time water is not available to my dogs is when they are crated for the night bedtime. In other words I don't put a water bowl in the crate with them. I took Ace out every two hours for the first week, period for 24/7. Withing a week to ten days he was potty trained but still makes the occassional mistake, usually it's because we don't notice the telling signs like him sitting next to the door waiting for someone to let him out to do his business. After playing, after meals, after naps they go out to potty.
Even the maltese which is a neutered male 2 years old makes mistakes once in a while usually for the same reasons given above. Part of potty training is the owner being trained. Withholding water could be part of the problem, it seems to me they need to get use to drinking and being able to hold their pee in a reasonable fashion until you let them out. But if water is withheld that could be the reason the pup is gorging itself when it gets water and then throwing up. I'm no expert, there are plenty people here that know way more than me about it

cleaning poop up inside the house is part of the joy of being a pupppy owner. Just kidding a bit but don't but too much pressure on yourself. One book on housetraining that I read before I brought the pup home was that if/when the pup makes a mistake in the house then after you have taken the dog out and brought it back in go to the poop while the pup is watching and scold the poop before you clean it up. Scolding the dog after a mistake doesn't do any good they don't know what they are being scolded about.

Bogey is 20 weeks old and stil has accidents in the house. I have to be totally on top of him and watch for signals. One thing about bulldogs (as if you haven't figured it out) is that they are very narrow minded. Just last week, bogey had just been outside to pee and when he came in, he was attacking a new toy! I was so amused watching him and happened to be standing there when in the middle of play he just squatted and peed! I was shocked, and I think so was he! This is a pup who has been going a minimum of 8 hours in the crate at night without one accident since 9 weeks old. Here he is 20 weeks and just peed 20 minutes after going out. I really think the excitement of the toy made him forget where he was and his narrowmindedness just let him go! Just like a kid who pees the bed. Some get it at potty training, others get it much older. Dogs are no different. Stay consistent, praise for the good behavior, try to correct or ignore the bad. She'll get there!!

Another bit of advice that you may or may not have heard yet. Don't clean up the pee or poop in the house with an amonia based cleaner like windex. It smells enough like pee to lead to them marking it again

After being in his crate at night for 7 to 8 hours you would think Ace would run to the door to go outside. No. He lumbers out and stretches, wags his entire backside and wants to be petted. Goes to where my wife may be and wants the same. Falls on the floor and stretches more and belly crawls. All the while I'm calling him trying to get him out the door and he ain't in no hurry. Once he gets out he sits down and looks at me. Then I coax him to the yard and he pees for the longest time. Then he may run to the othe side of the yard and poop or he may come back on the patio. If I go back in he will follow but I've learned better. If he hasn't pooped yet I will walk him back to the yard he may sit down in the grass and look up at me so I walk a bit and he does too and then he will eventually start smelling around and poop or run to the other side of the yard to poop. But its comical in the morning he isn't in any big hurry to get out and do his business

All I can say is the WORST thing you can possibly do is restrict water. I think all of my puppies drank more than the older dogs, but that's because they are generally bouncing off the walls and leaping on stuff. I can see why they would need to drink more!!!

There is no answer on how long it takes to truly house train a puppy because it's like asking "how long is a piece of string"!!!

For example, Maggie was heaven to train. She just got everything straight away.

Daddy was the nightmare from hell to train. I could have pinned him in a space where he barely would have space to move around and every time he peed AND pooped in his crate. Then of course he was so excited that he would jump in the poop and put up his paws on the side of his crate. Can you imagine how hard it is to clean poop off those little wire squares that make up the side, front and back of a crate. That poop just doesn't want to come off!!!

Linus started off perfect, went straight to the puppy pad .... then decided puppy pads were actually invented to be thrown around the room and then eaten. And then pee on the carpet next to what was left of the chewed up puppy pad.

Eventually, Linus got it and he's fine now. Daddy is two years old and still seems to think its ok to pee on his bed every few months.

All I can think of is that Daddy was a puppy mill rescue and didn't have the right socialisation a normal puppy would have received from his mother.

So the key is to be patient and above all consistent!!!

Vent away, some are harder to train than others are. I think Karen got it, I got Pookie from a breeder and all of the puppies I have had around here have been my own, and he was a nightmare to train. I had 12 week old puppies around and he was over 6 months old and they were trained better than he was! Same training, different up bringing... those first 8 weeks of their life are crucial in the training aspect....I really think it may make a difference. Or Pookie could just be a PITA :D. Hmmmm... Hard to decide on that one!
