Help Needed! Do her nares need surgery?

The vet I took Daisy to a couple days ago for her acne said that she should have some laser surgery done on her nares to widen them.

While Daisy is my first bulldog, she has what I consider a normal activity level for a bullie. Yes, she snores, and she starts panting after harder activities, but nothing I ever thought was abnormal.

What do you all think?


This vet also claims Daisy should have those two itty bitty teeth in the middle there removed, because they are too close together, and will pocket bacteria. I'm thinking this woman is pushing unnecessary surgeries to make a buck.

They look a little narrow, but as long as she is breathing OK and doesn't seem to have problems, then I would say she is OK. I'd definitely get a second opinion from a good bully vet. Not all vets are good bully vets, or understand the bulldog.

I can only add that I had my boy's mares widened at the same time he had his second entropian surgery and I can honestly say, it was one of the best things I've done for him. His breathing is wonderful now and it was such a minimal cost to do it!

I have not had nares widened but have had pallet clips done on 2 of my Bulldogs. I would get a second opinion, because some vets want to "fix" everything on Bulldogs!

Buster will have his nares done when he is neutered. I can hear the wheezing when he is active and I want to do everything I can to maximize his breathing comfort. His nares are so much smaller than Miss Tallulah' . However Miss Tallulah had to have her palette lasered - she snored like a drunken Sumo wrestler after too much Sake and now her breathing is so quiet. Buster appears to have no palette issues. I would agree a second opinion is in order if you feel this vet is all about the money. But nares and palettes are a sad fact of life for many Bullies and it is worth considering corrective surgery because their heart and lungs are not as compromised after they can breathe better.

It really depends on the opening size inside, that you cannot see in the photo and need a light shined inside. However the outside does look a bit tight. Does she snort and snore pretty heavy?

I was not planning on letting this vet do any surgery on Daisy, but I am going back to my old vet, and will have her look at Daisy, too.

I agree with others... get a second opinion. Our vet, whom I just LOVE, suggested this for our first bully, Nitschke, but he actullay said to us -'I think he needs it, but let's get you in front of the surgeon that will do the pallet reduction and see what she thinks.' She did agree, but it was so nice to have a vet actually say - it is good to get a secon set of eyes on something with a bulldog.

Nitshcke had so many breathing issues until we got the procedure (palet, nares and two other things) for him.... it was a world of difference after it was done. FYI -- she will still snore after, just not as LOUD

I had Wilbur's done....his were so tight, he would snore like crazy and totally did not have the energy Layla did (just couldn't get his breath and was habitually mouth-breathing). While Wilbur was in the middle of his knee surgery, my vet called me and suggested the nares widening. The surgeon doing the surgery knee operation ( renowned expert in the area) relayed to me that his nares were so pinched it was probably affecting his growth and development in terms of blood oxygen levels. He also said helping this would aid healing from the knee surgery. He was already under for the knee surgery, so I agreed. I can honestly say it was a great decision. They were just opened a little inside, dissolving stitches, and he has so much more energy and stamina. I am so glad we did this for him. Layla is the snorter now!

Well how old is your baby? When Raven was a baby and we had her initial visits the vets wanted to keep an eye on it and suggested it might be something to think about. He did also say that we should wait until we were having her spayed to decide. That way she was only being put under once and he said there is still some growth time. Well long story short we ended up not having to have it done because they opened where he was comfy.
