Need some help with Guinness

So I don't know if i should be nervous but Guinness has 4 or five bumps under his chin they almost look like pimples. Started off with two about a month or so ago but now they have started to multiply. Have no idea what they could be. Also his eyes are watering CONSTANTLY and he is starting to have real bad tear stains. His eyes are also redder. Don't know if it is just allergies or not. Food hasn't changed has been on FROMM puppy gold since he came home. Appreciate all the help I can get. Here are some pics, wish i could get better pics but he wouldn't sit still. and PS I miss all you guys and girls

Are you using plastic or metal bowls?? Plastic can cause chin allergy, I had to switch to metal bowls, Vegas also had open sores.

metal bowls; it looks like may have opened and scabbed over at one time. Don't know if it could be caused by all the excess water that stays on that part of chin while drinking...also possible allergies due to weather change coupled with the soaked face from tears

My vet gave me some Rx shampoo from his office, it is an anti-fungal, yeast shampoo it helped alot with the open sores. Although you are feeding a very good food, perhaps a grain/gluten free food as I had to with Vegas, this also helped tremendiously with the open sores.

He could have a bacterial infection. My girl used to get those and we did everything we could think of the clear it up, finally went to the vet, got antibiotics and it cleared right up. She has had 1 relapse since then and we just treated her with the same type of antibiotics. If it doesn't get better soon, I would take him in.

Everyone knows of acne as a human condition suffered by unfortunate teenagers during adolescence, but it is in fact quite common in certain breeds of dog too. The most susceptible breeds are young adult boxers, English bulldogs, Doberman pinschers, Great Danes and Rottweilers. The condition starts at puberty around 5 to 8 months of age. Most dogs improve with age and the condition typically resolves after one year of age, though some dogs can develop chronic acne.

Dogs with canine acne develop multiple comedones (blackheads) on their chin, lips, and muzzle. Plugs of debris made of natural substances such as keratin and sebum block the hair follicles, causing focal swellings which can rupture to form scabs.

Dogs with this condition have swellings, scabs and blackheads on their lips, chin and muzzle. These usually do not bother the dog unless a secondary bacterial skin infection develops. This can cause pain and itching, leading the dog to scratch at his/her face or rub it along the carpet.

Diagnosis is usually straight forward - the characteristic appearance described above, in one of the known susceptible breeds is usually sufficient. Your vet may decide to take a skin biopsy for confirmation, which can be done under sedation, local or general anaesthetic and then sent off to a histopathologist for analysis.

Treatment

Canine acne cannot really be cured, but can be controlled. Mild cases are usually not treated. The first step is always to rule out other conditions such as demodecosis (a mite infestation), ringworm and puppy strangles. The latter also causes anorexia and depression so if your dog is bright with a good appetite, it is unlikely to be this. Also important is to uncover any predisposing factors such as underlying allergies. Some of the breeds mentioned above, such as Boxers, are particularly susceptible to food allergy. Regular cleaning with anti-acne products (eg benzoyl peroxide) or mild anti-seborrheic shampoos will be required to decrease the bacterial load of the skin and remove cellular debris which could contribute to blocking the pores.

If pustules have ruptured and a secondary bacterial infection develops, your dog will need to take antibiotics for 3 or 4 weeks. Most broad spectrum antibiotics are effective, but to avoid any resistance problems a bacteriology swab is advisable so that a suitable antibiotic can be chosen with certain efficacy against the bacterium in question.

If a dog is scratching at his/her face a lot, an anti-inflammatory drug such as a one off steroid injection is probably indicated to alleviate the discomfort.

Refractory and recurrent cases can sometimes respond to retinoid therapy - similar to the human drug Roaccutane, which essentially stops the sebaceous glands in the skin from producing sebum. This however requires a veterinary specialists consent.

I had the same issue with Brutus and then I swiched from platstic to metal bowls. They also slobber all over the place when they drink so I tried to wipe his chin everytime he drank water and those bumps soon cleared up.

HRH broke out some when she was eating the Fromm surf and turf, but since changing her to Beef Frittata and making sure her treats had no chicken either she hasn't been getting any pimples or rashes on her legs. We did find a little bit of rash on her belly last week though, so don't know if there's any sure fire magic cure all for all allergy symptoms.

I have the same problem with Gator and it started at about 5 months old. We had to get antibiotics and they are clearing up. His tear stains also started around 4 or 5 months old. I finally switched him to Fromm Beef Frittata which has no chicken and is grain free and along with the antibiotics, it is clearing up FINALLY! His tear stains are also lightening up with peroxide and Chlorhexadine wipes (which I also now use on his chin). Before, I would clean them and they would never get better. For us, I think we needed a round of antibiotics, to start using the chlorhexadine wipes and switch his food to chicken/grain free.

It's puppy acne - Linus and Bentley had it but Truman does not - just part of growing up, kind of like all the other stuff. We actually to the vet specially for this "ailment" with Bentley and our vet basically said he has some acne, wash his face more but since the bulldog LOVES to sweep his face over everything, it's kind of hard!

That said, a high quality diet can help limit things like puppy acne, tear stains, and blood shot eyes so that is something to consider too.

I know you've got him on Fromm Puppy .. but I believe, and I haven't checked .. that it's not as good as the fromm 4* range. Maybe it's time to try switching him over because you said he had the bumps on his chin AND watering eyes with developing tear stains. Sounds like allergies to me!!

In the meantime, I'd like to point out that you are obviously mis-treating him, and so should probably arrange to have him shipped over to me in Ohio as soon as possible .....

Dozer has acne also. We use metal bowls and he is on grain free food. Our vet says sometimes it just happens. I think I remember [MENTION=490]reallyrob[/MENTION] saying he uses stridex pads or something similar on Bertie once in a while.
