So sorry to read this. My beloved blue Shar Pei, Razz Ma Tazz had bone cancer and our vet said the same. That was 15 years ago and I still miss her every day. A rosewood box with her ashes sits on a shelf with her collar and photos. Every dog is special. You did the right thing. You bully would have been loving enough to do it for you if your roles were reversed.
