She just turned 5 months on sunday. I was told all my life it was 6 months they need to have it done but I have seen mixed reviews all over on here. I'm hoping somebody with experience can give me some advice. Should I have it done next month or wait? Also when do they usually go into their first heat cycle? Honestly, I would prefer to NOT have her go in heat but if it is whats best for her then I cant complain.

There are differing opinions for sure. Some say wait until after her first heat and others say 6 or 7 months. We had Harlea spayed at 7 months after consulting with our vet who said that would be the earliest he would do it and even then it would depend on how she has developed.

do it before her first heat, that's what we did. I don't see a need to wait. Lola got spayed at 6 months.

I adopted a 7mo puppy and took her to the vet. The vet stated he would spay her at 1yr. That she may heat as they can start anywhere between 8-14 months. So we are waiting until 1yr based on our vets recommendation.

Our vet has always recommened anytime after 6 months of age

We had our female spayed at 6 months before the first heat as recommended by our vet.

Se here we spayed Shy and all my other dogs at 6 months of age ,i had one that was neutered later ,but i couldn't see any difference between late and early neutering

The only thing I ever heard, is that if the female is the only female in a litter of all other males, you should wait till after the first heat. Apparently the lone female could have excessive testosterone from being in the womb with all other males.
