Hi everyone, my 5 month old EB is shedding a lot, and Iā€™m not sure if itā€™s seasonal. Weā€™re in CA and donā€™t really have seasonsā€”it was 80Ā° on Monday, so Iā€™m not sure if heā€™s blowing his coat or if itā€™s something else. He is on Acana grain free red meat recipe currently and having no issuesā€”firm poops, no itching or licking. We tried the Acana grain free freshwater fish recipe, but it didnā€™t sit well with him, so weā€™re sticking to the red meat for now. I just began giving him coconut oil yesterday, so I will update on that, but the shedding just seems like a lot to me.

He did have some dandruff, but weā€™re hoping the coconut oil helps with thatā€¦ to be honest, we could have been bathing him too regularly.

I could just be over-worried, but Iā€™m not sure exactly how much shedding is too much. Does anyone have experience with this? Is he shedding his puppy coat and winter coat, and can that explain the large amount of shedding? Any help is appreciated!!

You answered your own question :)

Yes bathing n dandruff is often a sign. Bathing should be like 2x a yr, use fragrance free baby wipes throughout the yr or a swim in the ocean is great for any skin issue! BTW they do shed puppy fur at that age. Acana is a quality kibble. Do rotations after each bags so his system gets use to all proteins. Duck is easier to digest. Rotation will build his immune system to avoid future allergies or health issues. Also you can buy raw organs, chop it up n use as a topper on his meals. Freeze little portion bags about a 1/4cup in each so itā€™s always on hand.

Agree with Helene. Lessen bath and our guy is going on 8, his white fur sheds like a blizzard all year long, his red fur barley sheds. No idea why, but it is how he has always been.

Louie and Ella are shedding like crazy right now. They are both white and always shed but I think itā€™s super bad right now as they are blowing their coats.

Our guys always blow coat right after a bath. Otherwise all 4 hold on to their fur.

I'm in Florida and my bully still sheds in spring. He gets a bath only when he needs it - like when he goes and mucks himself up - he has this strange habit of digging up dirt in our backyard and burrowing in it like he's a chicken.

He doesn't get bathed often but he does love his daily vacuuming! I have this vacuum cleaner (Miele) that has a sucking-strength adjustment. I set it to the lowest setting, stick the furniture brush on the end and brush him with it. You should see him when he gets his bum brushed, he goes silly like he just went to heaven.

My personal experience with my English Bulldog "issues" regarding EVERYTHING about what is best or what to do, be food, care, grooming, shedding, skin, toys, etc etc etc has been like going down " a rabbit hole. " My EB is now 5 1/2 years and also live in California. From puppy to current she has never stopped shedding year round avalanche that's epic. One swoop of my hand over her back and those micro white hairs are snowing all over ...ALL THE TIME ALL YEAR with "seasonal" upstaging the rest of the year. In the beginning sought any info the planet provided only to find myself still buried beneath her unbelievable shedding. Nothing stops it but brushing only promoted more so I stopped that. She has been on Royal Carin since brought to me by her breeder and my VET suggest she remain on that diet because other than shedding she exhibits no other of the plethora of potential problems such as gastrointestinal etc ( so far) and he says she developed beautifully with good hips, paw and nose placement. I told him she is a budget English Bulldog my husband and I purchased for $1800 straight outta of Simi Valley" and the breeders even delivered her to us in San Fernando Valley ( they also said we were more than welcome to pick her up and see their competent environment) however porch delivery appealed my sensibilities. Honestly, from all the myriad of issues I've seen in EB groups on social platforms can praise the fine breeder who sold me my Rainbow. She's truly my darling little doll face but...let's be honest had I known then what all have learned about English Bulldigs "might've" taken a pass. Often wonder, "is it karma?" Lol My Vet does give her Cyto point injection every 6 weeks. That she has no itching, skin rashes etc attribute to that injection despite does nothing to lessen her shedding. Mentally have trained my mind to embrace her shedding until she crosses the " Rainbow Bridge" because " it is what it is" all over my house, bed, clothes and don't get me started on the car. My carwash crew do a great job vacuuming after her. Early on I stopped having her professionally groomed or using those wipes because everytime after either usage noticed she actually got skin irritation from all that jazz. Now, I shower her twice a year with Johnson baby shampoo and let her dry natural. Her environment has no mud or dirt and she stays clean with no issues in her folds or elsewhere on her skin. If the news reported researchers in "warp speed" have a new dog vaccine that stops shedding in their tracks" would be the first in line with Rainbow. Hey, would do the same for me if they come out with a vaccine to repel those those pesty invisible California mosquitoes from eating me alive year round making it nearly impossible to sit on my porch and enjoy my garden. It seems to me if research scientist were able to come up with a pill that repels fleas on our dog and cats ( remember when they didn't and we all had to give flea baths and use those flea bomb fumigators? UGH) that surely any day the cure for severe excessive shedding or those menacing mosquitoes aggressive attacks will soon be a faded memory.
