Pneumonia in bulldog puppy

We have a 13 week old bulldog puppy - Blu. He was diagnosed with pneumonia a week ago and we have had him at a bulldog specialist and he's taking antibiotics. But we are struggling to clear the yucky stuff he tries to cough out. Any suggestions for us? We are doing nebulizer treatments, steam sessions in the bathroom with the shower on hot, and have 2 vaporizers running by where he sleeps.

Meds have to be allowed to work. Maybe some gentle pats (with a cupped hand) on the back may help move mucous out of the lungs. Anything more than that, and you’re risking reaspiration into, perhaps, an uneffected lung. Keep doing what you’re doing and I’ll send some prayers for a quick recovery your way.

What I did was a mixture of essential oils in the diffuser. I would put the diffuser over her kennel while she was sleeping at night which I did close the door so she can breathe in the EO. She was also on antibiotics before I started the diffuser. In Nyala ‘s case the antibiotics didn’t work. I’m NOT saying for you to stop the antibiotics either. Do finish it and give daily probiotics like fermented sauerkraut or plain Greek Yogurt as antibiotics will kill also the good cells. Probiotics is to protect the good cells in their gut. So...this is the recipe I made and took 3days n Nyala was clear as a whistle... it truly works. Also make sure your diffuser is on 24/7 where ever your dog is roaming.

Respiratory/Colds (In the diffuser. Cup size in diffuser is about 1/2cup. IF cup size is ONE cup, double the oils)

3 drops of Eucalyptus
3 drops of Peppermint
3 drops of Lavender
2 drops of Lemon (Do not add more LO IF the cup size holds ONE of water)
Do add 2 drops of Tea Tree

I also forgot to mention that Blu also has Hypoplastic Trachea. A genetic disease that causes the malformation of the trachea cartilage rings that causes narrowing of the airway. There is a chance as Blu grows that the trachea could partially or completely resolve the narrowing.
Has anyone else experienced this issue and if so what was the results?

Blu has been having the yogurt and really likes it. The breeder was not feeding the puppies the best food and Blu was pretty stinky when we brought him home. We have transitioned him to Royal Canine for bulldog puppies and that has improved his smelly gas.

Diffuser rule : Oil and water DO NOT mix why you need a diffuser that is ultrasonic ionizer cause the vibration is so fast it breaks the oils in the water. Example, If you put oils in your bath you need a carrier which means like a teaspoon of honey or coconut oil n mix it in then put it under running water.

Keep these threads handy as you have a puppy n if you start maintenance Immediately you’ll avoid tons of health issues like you’re going through now. Especially “if” he “might” have Trachea problems down the road. Basically keep a diffuser on all the time. His airways will always have to stay clear. Don’t add too much Tea Tree! Just a couple drops as it kills airborne pathogens.

Other thing is, you’re not going to find a lot of members that approves RC as dog food. I’m one of them. Read the ingredients and you’ll see it’s all grains. Dogs are carnivores. Your dog needs to build his immune system especially as a pup. The smelly issues are basically bad gut. Need to not just give yogurt. I prefer fermented sauerkraut in the fridge section. One teaspoon per day especially if he’s on RC. Acana has tripe in their kibbles. Tripe is a great probiotic. If you insist on yogurt stick to plain Greek yogurt and not regular yogurt. Stay away from sugar as that sure won’t help the smells. Low fat, sugar free = hidden sugars. Apple cider vinegar is another great way to balance the PH in a body. Add a bit daily in the drinking water.

Questions.....Do you know what the breeder was feeding him? Did your vet tell you to do the nebulizer treatments/mask/vaporizer? Does You vet know bullies? Are you putting tea tree in the nebulizer treatments/mask n have him breathe it? What are the brand of your oils?

Hypoplastic Trachea, oh boy...that changes things a bit.
Did your Vet take X-rays to diagnose the HT, the pneumonia?
Is your Vet very knowledgeable/experienced with Bulldogs? I ask this because hypoplastic treachea and pneumonia present the same rattly sound and Bulldogs, all Bulldogs, have somewhat of a narrow airway. Misdiagnosis and confusing the two is not uncommon.
If your Bulldog does indeed have HT then having pneumonia on top of it at such a young age is very concerning. We have had 4 bulldogs that I can recall that were diagnosed with HT. As I recall, they lived normal lives with proper management(more on that later). HT for 2 of them was complicated with enlarged palate. We opted to have palate surgery on both of them and it was successful in offering some relief. Any kind of surgery is higher risk than with a patient with a normal trachea.
Management...I recommend slow feeding, not allowing your Bulldog to be able to gulp anything. Additionally, the owner of an HT dog must always be aware of heat and over-activity...either can send the dog into respiratory distress. It comes on quickly and recovery is difficult.
We have yet to have a dog with HT diagnosed as a puppy...so I suppose it's possible that they/he may grow out of it. The dogs I recall were all mature and diagnosis only came after Vet exam due to an episode of respiratory distress or pneumonia.
I hope Blu can get over this quickly and lead as normal a life as any other Bulldog

Yes we traveled 2 hours away to get Blu to a vet that specializes in English Bulldogs. They took x-rays to diagnose the pneumonia and he had suspected the HT and the xray confirmed that as well.

He did advise us on the slow feeding and always watching while he eats. Blu seems to be a slow eater naturally. We only give him half of a feeding at a time so that he doesn't have access to a large amount at one time. Once he finishes the first amount then we give the second serving.

We are very cautious with our bulldogs about the heat and running around too much. But with Blu we will have to be extra cautious.

We are hoping for the best case senerio and his trachea grows with him and it will be more manageable for him.

We are planning on doing surgery for him if the vet feels it will improve his everyday functioning. But obviously we have the pneumonia hurdle to get over first.

I was going to tag you on HT but I thought you saw post. I figured for sure you came across that issue.

Because you haven’t answered my question on tea tree, I’ll ask..just Incase you’re not aware..... are you adding tea tree to the nebulizer treatment? Mask? IF you are as I DONT KNOW if you know how powerful TT is, stop immediately!!! Good only a couple drops in a diffuser (or diluted in a carrier oil) but not for nebulizer treatment that’s inhaled full force directly in the lungs as you will damage you dog’s lungs n tea tree can kill pets. Again I’m just going out on a limb hoping you’re not adding TT directly into the lungs.

Oh NO - Blu's nebulizer treatments are with a prescription from the Vet - Albuterol solution. I would never put EO's in a nebulizer. I have had severe asthma since I was 10 years old so I am very use to using the nebulizer and respect what goes into the lungs. What we use in the vaporizers is the solution made for vaporizers with menthol / lavender. I have not put any EO'S on or in Blu.

I asked Blu's vet for a suggestion for food - he said Natural Balance. Any thoughts on that brand?

Our previous bulldog Maxwell - pictures below - had issues with chicken and eggs so we cooked for him. He ate beef and pork for his proteins and loved many different veggies and fruits. Maxwell had hydrocephalus and we lost him at the age of 2.

We would like to have Blu on a good puppy food and have his treats things we cook for him and fresh veggies and fruit. Trying to keep his diet as clean and simple as possible.

I just had to ask as mentioned I don’t know you and wanted to make sure you’re guided properly on oils. I’ve been doing oils for years... But regarding menthol (smells like Vick’s), I personally wouldn’t use it on any pet. Basically it can upset their gastrointestinal area and even their breathing. Stick to the lavender and use eucalyptus instead. I don’t know the brand of oils you buy, if you want a good brand would be DoTerra. Here’s a great link that explains menthol smells.
