I was hoping someone has experience or advice about our English Bulldog,
In a nutshell, our boy is 4, he is active, he's a healthy weight and isn't blotted, he eats raw dog food, he doesn't rush his food, he has regular exercise, drinks water fine, in no pain whatsoever, naps like normal, but and this is our problem
He is constantly burping and belching and it absolutely stinks, he will do it and sometimes he just vomits up, we are constantly cleaning up after him, he is perfectly house trained and never Messes, but he has no control over this happening.
Is there anything I can do? Is it possibly the food he's on?
Is it more of a deeper concern? We googled a few symptoms and it wasn't really matching as he is absolutely fine but it can't be good for him either aswell as us cleaning up small pieces of sick daily!
Ant advice would be massively appreciated as we didn't want to start a investigation yet with a vet that could cost a fortune.
Thanks to all in advance.
Mike.

Have you had his soft palate checked?

Agree with Christine , soft palate.

Does he drinks right after eating or before?

Everytime I've heard or googled soft palate it's ref. Breathing difficulties or reverse sneezing, he drinks through out the day normally, eats at a slow pace, he has no trouble with swallowing and doesn't gag!! So I'm just at a loss

Does he vomit by heaving first...wretching? Or does he just suddenly regurgitate?

No never, he could actually be led on his side snoozing and will just regurgitate, I'll clean and he will just get on with his day, but it's everyday, I wouldn't say constant but he will do it at some point

Keeping in mind that I am not a vet and this is not medical advice, just some personal experience that seems similar to yours:

What you’re describing is not vomiting, it is regurgitation. I also do not think it’s a soft pallet issue (if his breathing is never bad).

In my opinion he needs to be checked for hiatal hernia. however, I don’t believe there is a good solution…

something you might try to alleviate the regurgitation is Prilosec OTC (omeprazole). Take great care that it is the base omeprazole and no additional (does not contain aspartame or other artificial sweeteners, is not magnesium whatever). Give it a half hour before breakfast (no later!). And break his food up as much as you can. 3 meals is better than 2 and 4 is better than 3.

In addition you may want to try cycling through proteins and stick with the protein that causes him to regurgitate the least. Noting that it may take a few days after a switch to notice improvement.

Agree with @benny…great advice. Could be acid reflux. Louie went through a bout of something similar and I spent over $1,000 on tests to find nothing. We would do boiled chicken and rice for a few days to settle his belly and everything, slow feed bowl, split up his 2 meals into smaller meals, gave Pepcid. Louie also eats raw so I paid more attention to what protein he was eating at the time to see if there was any connection.

It’s been well over a year now with no issues. If the issues had persisted, checking for a hiatal hernia would have been the next step.

Hey Mike,
Gunny is somewhat in the same manner, but mine is because I allow him to eat whatever I eat (Not a good thing to do). I have slowed down with the weekly Happy meals (fries and burger), and other human foods, but there are sometimes when he still vomits. As for the soft palate, I have had his shaved down when I first got him (Sept 23), but now times, he still throws up here and there. I don't know if it is the Oberta original beef jerky sticks he gets daily or the handful of original pringles he loves to devour, but it seems to work when he doesn't eat them all the time. I'm with you, Gunny get his daily walks every day, healthy as an ox, drinks tons of water, but there are times when he burps and vomit-- all I can say is thank God for the Bissell dog rug cleaner == works like a charm! I can agree with you on the burping and belching stinks but my bulldog's gas -- he definitely knocks it out of the park!

Regurgitation is a classic symptom of Megaesophagus. However, Mega-E is not the only thing that can cause the regurg.
Have your Vet(or a specialist) eval for Mega-E. An X-ray(with contrast) is all that's required.

Jake last yr regurgitated bad. He was checked nothing to be found. He’s been using a slow feeder over 6 months n I see a difference. Totally helps. This week he’s only on beef. Usually all 3 gets different proteins, turkey, chicken, bison, pork, tripe. Now that they finished all them boxes (raw) im going back to one protein. Trying to figure out which protein doesn’t work for him. The other 2 have no issues but they can tag along.

I’m currently reading a book called ā€œGive your dog a boneā€ which is partially about table scraps (albeit non-processed, whole food)

In the olden days, dogs didn’t get kibbles, they got whatever was left from the table. Lived till 18-20’s …….. Makes you wonder eh

I see you’re quoting the book

We did this when I was a kid... we never bought dog food, they got our left overs from breakfast and dinner, on a paper plate. Mind you, we did not eat fast food or processed meals, my Mom home cooked each meal
