My bulldog on occasion will start gagging, like he's choking, or he's trying to grasp air. Is this normal, i have never seen any of my previous dogs do this?

Thanks in advance.

Hi Nypanama, does your bully do this at rest, after playing hard, after eating or drinking? I don't think it's "normal". My inclination would be to have a vet check him out to make sure everything is okay.

Hi Cali Baker,

thanks for the reply. Actually it occurs at different times. Last night for instance, he was sleeping, then all of a sudden he wakes up making this "snorting" type sound as if trying to catch his breath.

Another time, he was standing up on two legs and then he did it again.

Sounds like a reverse sneeze. Does it sound like he is trying to breath in through his nose with a snorting sound? If so that's what it is. It happens to some bullies and to all dogs occasionally. Lucy and our Beagle Missy do this sometimes. To help stop it, cover their nares with your fingers, it helps them "re-set" their breathing. Sometimes allergies come into play and sometimes like in my Beagles case, she has sniffed up something.

Hey David,

i would not describe it as a reverse sneeze, but more like when a child is trying to bring up phlegm, and they make that noise in the back of the throat trying to spit it out.

It may just be phelm build up.... have you tried lemon juice - a little squirt in the throat helps break it up

I'd have Hondo checked by a bulldog specialist, especially if this is happening when he's sleeping. I agree with cali baker. It doesn't sound normal to me either. We had similar problems with our rescue.

All I can add is that Maggie used to do this a lot .. and often throw up a clear phlegm. This was when I knew no better and she was being fed Beneful. As soon as I switched her on to Fromm these symptoms went away.

So I guess that I need to ask .............what food are you feeding?
