Mabel sleeps by my side of the bed right after she comes up the stairs at night, then moves to her crate, where she sleeps with the door open. 







We covered it with the vinyl shown above (also purchased from the sewing store) and stapled the bottom with a staple gun, just like you would if you were upholstering a chair seat. For the bottom of the mattress we were going to use carpet underlay but I actually found foam core poster board (stationery dept) at Walmart that was the exact right size and black so we used that instead. It just has to be thick enough to give the staples something to adhere to. The benefit of the foam core board is that it is much lighter than underlay material so it is easy to move the mattress. You cannot feel the staples from above so I don't have to worry about the staples poking Chance. The vinyl can be wiped down with a damp cloth..
Thanks for the hints going to try to convince my husband to do this would look great rather then having all the doggy stuff scattered thru the great room.
