We started on stainless steel because we were already prepared for how much our puppy was going to chew on things. Looks like we lucked out in more ways than one.

I use ceramic or stainless and they are run through the dishwasher daily. Plastic can scratch and then harbor bacteria, so you want to be careful with that kind of bowl and clean it thoroughly after each use.
