I have recently rehomed an English Bulldog puppy, she was 4 months when we got her. We didn’t notice any issues with her weeing in her bed of a nighttime until a few weeks ago, so I took her to the vet and she was put on a course of anti inflammatories to help the mild uti he thought she had. It’s been over a week now and she is still weeing in her crate of a nighttime but is perfect in the day (no accidents in bed) and even runs to the door when she needs to go. I was wondering if anyone else has had this issue before? Picture of baby Margot attached as she’s a little angel, and we couldn’t imagine life without her now.

We stupidly let Ralph sleep with us from a puppy, with no accidents but now he is 5 I have a tiny corner of a superking bed. Good luck, she is stunning!

She is really cute. She is still quite young, and may not be able to hold that long. I always got up during the night to take a pup out until about 6 months of age. Welcome to EBN!
Personally I have never heard of anti inflammatories for uti or cystitis. BUT I am not a Dr.! My thought is that she is just a puppy!

Anti-inflammatories for a possible UTI? That doesn't sound right but in any event, 4 months old is still young. Mine all were potty trained around 6 months and my youngest still had some accidents in the house after that. She could still be adjusting to her new life with you and just may not be able to hold it all night. If you can, take her out in the middle of the night and when she does go outside, make you sure you give lots of praise and maybe even a high value treat. Some dogs just take longer to potty train.

Also, it is very important to have a vet well-versed in brachy breeds.

Vet should have prescribed an antibiotic to treat a UTI. My thoughts are that this pup is still too young to sleep through the night without having to go out to pee. Try taking up the water supply a couple of hours before bedtime and make sure she goes potty right before everyone turns in for the night.

Thank you, she is amazing. It’s my first time owning an English bulldog (have Rottweilers in my family home and Margot now lives with my boyfriend and his 2 German shepherds). He said she didn’t have a uti as such but it had potential to develops and he did see protein in her urine so as a precaution prescribed antibiotics to help any potential inflammation that maybe there. But I agree on she is still very young, I think I’ve scared myself googling and it telling me she may have an incontinence issue. Will keep an eye on her for the next few months and see if she grows out of it. Thank you xx

I agree I thought this was odd, he said it had potential to be a UTI as there was protein in her wee but said it hadn’t fully developed into one as we had caught it early so prescribed the anti inflammatory to help any potential swelling. But I think you’re right on her being young this is my first English bulldog (I have 2 family Rottweilers at home and Margot now lives with me, my boyfriend and his 2 German shepherds) and I’m aware of their health implications so I just want to make sure I am doing right by her. I’ll keep an eye on her for a few months until she’s a bit older and see if she eventually grows out of it, I think I’ve scared myself googling and it telling me she could be incontinence. Thank you x

Thank you! I did think the same when he prescribed them but he said it wasn’t a full blown uti yet but he could see some protein in her urine so prescribed the anti inflammatory incase there was any swelling. She is basically fully toilet trained now, she’s amazing at running to the door when she needs to go so maybe it is being left for longer hours, will make sure I get up and let her out tonight and see if that helps :)

I agree I’ve only ever had Rottweilers and Margot now lives with me, my boyfriend and his 2 German shepherds. I’m aware of the health implications English bulldogs have so have taken out higher insurance for her and made sure to take her for a check up the day we rehomed her. I will do some research into vets by me that specialise in the breed as I just want what’s best for her. Thank you, this website has been very reassuring :) xx

If my boyfriend had his way she would be in bed with us as well šŸ˜‚ but we also have 2 German shepherds and would feel mean leaving them out. We have a super king and I don’t think that would be big enough for 5 of us šŸ˜‚ x

Our French Bulldog sleeps in the bed with us but the 3 bulldogs sleep downstairs on the couch together!

An incontinent dog would be easy to spot. They cannot fully hold their urine. They can assume the position and attempt to pee but will never fully empty the bladder. Then you have a dog that drips, leaks urine constantly and the inside of the rear legs becomes yellow from urine stains.

The gang gave great advice… a rule of thumb, a pup can only hold it for one hour more than they are months old. So, 4 months old then 5 hours is the limit
