Just an update on looking for a vet for soft palate surgery for my little man Vader. He was starting to get worse and I decided to have the surgery here in Memphis, rather than transport him to Dallas, to his regular vet. Memphis Veterinary Specialist ER, DVM DACVS Chase Atwood did the surgery. Surgery went well and they watched him overnight and most of today and I just brought him home and he is sleeping after eating dinner. He sounds just awful, but seems to be breathing a whole lot better. Boarded his sister Reya for a few days while Vader recovers some. He is on 2 weeks of no fun, don't think about having fun, recovery. He is currently snoring, but at a less decibel than before and I think he will be fine. He's glad to be home and I am also. About it, just a quick update..

That’s great news!!! Good job. Keep us posted on his recovery.

Good to hear everything went well. If he throws up (they do feel nauseous after surgery), consider putting him on a bland diet with rice and minced meet, for instance, boiled for a very long time and with enough water to turn it into a soup. Castor threw up the first days after surgery and we got the advice here to change his diet, and it made a big difference.

I concur with both replies above. While he may sound bad now, in 2 days you will notice a significant difference and he will probably want to play and be his normal self! It's amazing how fast they bounce back. After 2 days the hardest part of my girls recovery was keeping her calm and trying to force her not to play!

Keep us updated on how he is doing :heartsign:

I concur with above comments. Be VERY aware of his condition if he pukes even a small amount. With the associated trauma to the throat it's not uncommon to aspirate and develop pneumonia. Watch closely!
Also, whatever you feed...it helps to feed it slowly so that he's not able to gulp down a large qty of food. Slow feeding is safe feeding.

Thanks all for the replies and great advice. He is a pretty calm dude and was ready to play 30 mins after surgery. I am still boarding his little sister for a few more days to let him recuperate. He is doing well, still sounds like hell and woke me up a couple of times last night clearing his throat. But hopefully be back to normal soon enough..

If you have one, run a vaporizer near him while sleeping to help with any congestion

Quick update: Vader is progressing nicely and healing and just being himself. I do have a question, on Sunday afternoon which is about a week from his surgery, we went outside and with the storms a can had blown into the yard. He saw it before me and totally lost it and pounced on the can.. After a brief scrum, I got the can from him and it is probably my imagination, but I think his breathing is a little more strained than before the incident. So far he hasn't had any of the after surgery issues, but still has a bit of raspy sounds and a slight clear discharge from his nose sometimes. He is scheduled back early next week for a checkup and if anything seems to get worse instead of better I will take him in sooner. Oh, my question, I don't think he tore anything as there has been no blood or other issues other than some nose clear discharge and some breathing noise which probably is the same as before the 'can' incident. How quick did everyone's bullies return to normal? He is dying to play rough, but I refuse and have put all his hard toy's up per the vet..

I would keep him calm until you see your Vet. No heavy activity-you don't want to risk anything.

Keeping them come for at least two weeks is best... the incident may have just caused some inflammation... try leashing him whenever out till you go back for follow up

Some dogs recover more quickly than others...but I think this has to do more with how much tissue is removed(size of surgical site) than the individual patient.
expect full energy in 3 days, full recovery in 3 weeks

Just a quick update. Vader went for his post surgery checkup. All is fine and he can slowly return to normal activities.. guess that means he can power nap more. :)
