seizures??

The other day Ollie was outside and started coughing and tensed up, fell over and was tense for about a minute and snapped out of it...anyone had this happen? His vet check went good, so I'm not sure why that happened?

I remember Stig did that a couple of times when we brought him home at 5 months. But he would throw up first then get all tense and his knees would weaken. He hasn't done it since the beginning of fall, maybe it's heat related? Not too sure.

His tummy was a little u pset that day and he wasn't eating without throwing up, and I usually don't put him outside unless I am outside, we have a lot of amish and he doesn't like horese...LOL Maybe it just had to do with him feeling poopy!

I'm thinking his knees buckle because he's exerting so much effort throwing up, similar to how we get weak after we throw up. I guess monitor him and see if he continues getting an upset stomach. Hopefully it's only a 1 time occurance and he can sleep it off.

I just adopted him 2 weeks ago and he is 1, but the vet said he was healthy...so when he tensed up I was worried. I know EBD have a lot of health problems and he is my first and I am trying my best to do what is best for him, but I was scared....................

It's ok to be scared. It means you care and want the best for Ollie. There are a couple of bullies here who has epilepsy and needs daily meds to control their seizures. If you do a search you can even find videos of how these seizures look like.

There will also be someone here who may be able to shed some light on what happened to Ollie. I'm thinking the tension is a secondary reaction to the upset tummy and throw up.

I think you should take him back to the vet and explain what happened. I would just get them to check everything -- his heart, his breathing, etc. This will put your mind at ease! Busters had one incident when he was very young that I thought was a seizure and it really scared me. I was worried for so long, but when I took him to a specialist for something else, they checked out his heart and a bunch of other stuff and it really made me feel better. Just knowing that he's been thoroughly checked over might help! Also, the vet told me to write down exactly what happened and what was going on before and after. Keep a log, so if it continues you have a record.

Orion has done that twice. She was heaving for about a minute before she threw up. Simply put? She blacked out for a second due to not breathing. She fell over onto her side and started breathing.

My mom says (and don't laugh) that I use to do this also as a toddler. I'd start crying and I'd get so worked up, I'd hold my breath. Finally, I'd pass out. My mom let me do it. She figured I'd hurt myself once or twice and I'd eventually knock it off.

It's probably due to a lack of oxygen in some way. If Ollie wasn't stuggling to breath..I'd take him in. He shouldn't do this unless his breathing was compromised in some way.

Ask the vet to check his soft palate, tonsils and saccules. Buster & Opal did it when they were young, primarily with dry heaves. Because of the elongated soft palate, when they try to vomit, the epiglottis flips up and can close off the trachea, and they don't get any oxygen. If it happens again, check the color of his gums and tongue. If they are bluish in color, breathe into his nose or poke him/her in the nose to stimulate them to breathe again. Then take them to a vet that does the laser treatment if his soft palate needs to be corrected or if the tonsils &/or saccules need to be removed. Since they have had it done, they still get weak when they try to throw up, but don't faint anymore.

No laughing here. I didnt know this was possible until my mom told me (after watching Sierra do the silent cry and not take a breath) not to worry if she did pass out from it. It is ok and she would wake up once she caught her breath. Thankfully she never blacked out but I would have freaked without that bit of info beforehand.

Sounds like it could be something very similar but if you are concerned getting a vets opinion cant hurt. I cant count how many unnecessary vet visits we made the first 2 years of having Cutty. lol. Better to be reassured.

I'm only just reading this thread now and my initial thought has already been mentioned on here. I would guess that he blacked out from holding his breath from coughing. If he's fine now then I would just keep an eye on him for a while, but if he does it again then definitely a trip to the vets will be needed.

Let's hope it was just a one time incident!!!
